This thread is making me rethink a recent tire order of 255/85R16 ST MAXX. I was thinking the width would not impact MPGs as much or speed due to drag.

We shall see once they are installed this weekend

Don’t worry about it. Just had those exact same tires (and same size) installed last Monday and I love them. There is a slight difference in power but I’m honestly not sure if I would have noticed it if these Tacoma world threads never put that in my head.

My truck stock came with 265/70/17. After the lift I knew 285/70/17 wasn't big enough for me so I went with Toyo M/T at 295/70/17. Trimmed the front fenders slightly and did the CMC. Fit just fine.

Gas mileage decreased 1-3 MPG depending on how I drove on that tank of gas. Living in Colorado and going to the mountains does involve the slow lane while passing the semi's only. Typically have my kids, RTT, bed rack, recovery gear, tools and supplies so the weight is a contributing factor. I don't let the auto make up it's mind with what gear to be in. I typically go to 4 and then when the grade gets worse I go to 3rd briefly. Every now and then in the city the transmission will hunt for gears but it is not often enough to be a concern for me.

Sure you get power loss but I don't drive like Mario Andretti in a lifted Tacoma.
If I was looking to get better MPG's I would drive a Civic or Celica; not a lifted Tacoma.

The 33's didn't change my mind regarding MPG's, power loss, road noise or tranny concerns and it is not stopping me to going to 35's next month with stock gears. Maybe I'll re-gear next year, maybe I won't.

@sblspawn , Isn't your truck a prerunner? That would save you a boatload on the regear cost (only $700 from ecgs). Also if you don't wheel your truck then get P rated or some light c rated tires (the falkens are a great recommendation). You should have more than enough power to get 285's done. You gotta remember the actual tire height when mounted on your truck as well. I think your truck looks great as is and if you don't spend much time in the dirt or your tires are not bald I'd say leave it. I run 285/75/17s that measure 33" mounted on my truck with 30k miles on them. They are 70lb a piece E rated tires that I put to work hard. It was easy for me to justify the cutting, gearing, and the s/c so we could go exploring/wheeling at high elevation in remote areas. If I didn't wheel my truck but once or twice a year it would look much different.

Changing the size of the tires will have absolutely zero impact on power. What it *will* impact, is the torque, and you can calculate exactly how much that will change.

Thank you so much for the advice, man! You may be right, I can try to find a P tire and forget about the aggresive look of the Mud and the AT tires. I Guess that I can live with the truck as is because my Hankook Dynapro are fairly new, but I don't really like that much how they look after the Maxtrac lift. They are too thin now, because the new spindles pushed them out almost 1 inch. The 285/75r16 Hankook Dynapro AT weight 56 pounds, what do you think about that?

Over dramatic would be TYPING IN ALL CAPS THAT THIS IS THE WORST DECISION EVER.

OP asked for opinions and they were given. Not really seeing the drama in this thread.

I see what you mean on the width but I wouldn't say it looks bad. Id figure out what the stock wheel tire setup weighed and use that to compare to the new stuff. The junk that came on mine was I believe 66LBS (17" sport wheel with the bridgestone crap 265/65/17s) I'd probably push hard to keep the combo under 75lbs each (wheel and tire together). Keep in mind the wider tires will make the truck drive differently (follow ruts/grooves in the road) as well but so much of it will be opinion based from owner to owner. To me the only way to justify it is if you plan on selling your current tires to pay for the new ones but I'm a cheap ass and think that way about everything.

Maybe is me overreacting! It is like when you have a small pimple in the face and you think that it's huge and ugly, but no one can see the damn pimple because it's not really that big. :) I would never have believed that such a small difference in tires sizes could change the truck performance so much.

There was a special around Christmas for discount tire direct (I think?). Was like $622 with tax and shipping if I remember correctly

Sorry about the stick in your ass, I meant that people on this forum exaggerate a lot of things when it comes to their trucks. Thanks for giving me an example though I'll be more careful next time and call you before I post

Ran 255/85r16s for awhile. Loved everything about them. I feel like power and mileage was pretty close to the 265/75s. Pulled the boat great stopping distance wasn’t really affected nor was acceleration. Been running 285 75s for close to 2 years now. I’ve hated them ever since I put them on. Pulls boat like shit. They just make the truck a slug.
