So I was talking to my agent today, she was checking if I was still on the market for a house. which unfortunately after everything this year and how crazy the market is right now, I told her I'm probably just going towhich until next year or whenever it crashes.

    ANYWAY

while I was talking, I said you know I do have some questions about Automotive Insurance, "is it possible to get coverage when you have a large quantity of custom parts?" I asked.

She told me that by default my plan already has up to 5,000 and it includes parts and labor.

I couldn't believe that it included labor, that's awesome.

So now I feel much safer slapping on awesome mods and shit, and thankfully I do keep all receipts and paperwork from stuff like this.

just curious if anyone else out there was aware of this or if they've ever used it?

The downside is that you can't add coverage over that $5000 limit.

You cant do an additional rider? Like when adding one to renters or home owners for firearms?

I have only had USAA(25 yrs), does other auto insurance cos do the same thing about added custom parts?

Yes I found that strange that I cannot pay more for more coverage. Just seems very strange.

There's probably a way to add coverage with a separate policy (I have one for firearms and wife's jewelry) but when I asked about increasing coverage beyond $5000 for custom/aftermarket components I was told that it was not possible on the auto policy.

That's what I was told. Though for me 5,000 should be fine. Although I am curious what they consider a custom part. Does it matter?

I'm not on USAA but I'm curious about this too. If someone else is at fault, well, it would suck but they would be in the hook to restore my truck to the pre collision condition including any and all mods I did.
If I'm at fault, not so much. Hell, Liberty mutual would not even pay for OEM parts or paint and force me to get the cheapest fucking China parts around. Don't fit well? Take a hike, Mofo!
Anyway, I've heard people say that stated value policies may be a good option.
Anybody knowledgeable about those? In my head they make perfect sense for, say, a mint 1969 Mustang. Insure it for $60G... as an example.

Now my truck, KBB value around 20,000 but easily $15G in mods so if it get stolen or destroyed by a flood I'm obviously hosed!

At th same time I'm VERY hesitant to tell my insurer that I have tons of aftermarket parts and modifications none of which are DOT compliant... so... what's a guy to do?

If you go over 5000, I would look at getting a separate policy that covers your aftermarket parts specifically in case of an accident. I'm pretty sure stuff like that exist, otherwise no one would ever put that much crap on their car. Hahaha
