yeah I'm well aware of how easy and available testing sites are... I also can't find the time to do it plus I'm lazy...lol but reason why I was asking is because I always wondered if After acquiring the license, Can one legally set 2 radios up and leave one at home and take the other one with and communicate to one at home?

    Hmm...
Not trying to :stirthepot:... Besides for just listening on it, how can you "legally" use it without breaking FCC laws?

IIRC there is a certain way of getting these to work with in a group without breaking laws and transmitting far and wide

    No

    Correct.

The context of William’s question was communicating with a group. So I was assuming he would want two-way communications.

Yes. But I think William’s nice Taco is able to do that, with much better reception and sound quality.

There’s a frequency that surpasses the transmit and receive quality of CB and FRS. I think it still requires FCC regulation: an application, a fee, but no test. Let me google it and report back.

I believe you’re able to do that if the receive radio has someone listening to the radio and can somehow communicate to the Licensed Ham that transmitted via another method like a cell phone or other device. But then, that would be dumb. Or the person at the receiving end has a HAM license, then no issue.

There was some kind of debate about it on TW, but whatever. Apparently it's not certified to be used as gmrs (two-way) radio (for which you need a different $75 licence) so "legally" its a no go.
Anyways, not my business what people do with their equipment

More to the point, everyone around here uses CB (for some reason) so that what you want on the trail.

ImI all for a switch to GMRS, HAM or FRS.

A group GMRS license would make it alot closet to legal than trying to use it in the FRS band.

You can make a CB radio be able to reach places like New Zeland and have a nice chat with those guys

I've talked with Fairbanks AK from Tremont PA via CB, but real shortwave (HAM) is better.

OK. Yeah, close.... I might have mixed up FRS and GMRS, but I remember reading about that $75 'no test' licence.
Anyways, I think it's funny that you could buy a 5W or 8W HAM transceiver for a fraction of a cost of a handheld CB radio.

In other words, probably better to have my wife get a HAM license herself for the home unit? Lol

As I recall (after a few whiskeys) FRS is family radio service, <1W, fixed antenna; GMRS is commercial license, <5W, removable antennas allowed. I do not know if GMRS requires a type cert for the radio.

I have a GMRS radio for hunting, and a CB for TW wheeling. I can usually talk to the last truck in the group, and can often talk with remote places via my CB.

    Easy there! Lol
Way too many formats to choose from. Knowing Murphy's law, you all will chose one exactly opposite of whatever I'm licensed for... :annoyed::argue:
