    Here’s what I googled

GMRS requires a individual FCC license (which extends to family members.) has much more higher power limits, can use GMRS Repeaters for greater range.

MURS don’t need an FCC license, external antenna ok, but limited to two watts and is line of sight only.

The UV-5R and it’s many derivatives is capable of all the FRS/GMRS/MURS frequencies.

So after all this googling, I was thinking that maybe MURS and GMRS would be ok with the UV-5R, so I looked at the operators manual and here’s what I found on page 60

I am not a lawyer, but I did stay at a Hilton last night .

FRS can be used by GMRS liscencees. GMRS doesn't rwrequia type cert for the radio, although it does require a license and does have resricrestrions on the specs for allowable radios.

Okay so. What does it take to be able to use this up-5r. A ham license and stay on the “ham” channels?

Yeah. Based on what I just googled, FRS can be used by anyone. No license, no fees. Just buy the radio and you’re set.

GMRS use does require a license. But you just send in an “application” and a $70 fee and voila... you’re licensed.

All radio frequencies have power and antenna restrictions set forth by the FCC.

My issue is that if I knowingly communicate with an unlicensed person on a Ham channel, then I get fined and my license is pulled.

And that’s now federal shit to deal with, which would really suck for me.

Yeah, don't fuck around in ham band. GMRS and FRS are alot more forgiving.

I wouldn’t fish or hunt with a guy if he didn’t have a license. I would probably report them if I saw them fishing or hunting without a license. I’m pretty sure every sportsman I know would do the same.

Pretty much. I'm covered by a GMRS license, but it's so easy to comply with FRS, and it's so much better than CB.

There's a reason the guys out west use FRS

Yup. I have six FRS/GMRS radio’s (I’m from San Diego/Seattle) and yes, these radios are a LOT better than CB in terms of range and clarity.

Yup. And it could affect any government work or contracts that someone could bid on. Any federal jobs. Getting federal aid of any sort, SBA Loans, hell pretty much anything that has to do at the federal level could be compromised.

I just looked up some of those FRS/GMRS radios. Cool concept. And from looks of it, it isn't really necessary to install one in the truck. Handheld walkies would do a decent job during wheeling (or whatever) trips. Right?

Thanks for sharing your knowledge Lloyd.

I have this set of 2 way radios - https://www.amazon.com/Midland-GXT1...+way+radio&dpPl=1&dpID=41XbIQv63VL&ref=plSrch

Am I using them illegally by not having a license?
