Was it destiny? Only time will tell. Obligatory photo of my ride:

    upload_2018-9-19_23-27-33.jpg

I grew up in a little city called Univertisy Place if you want to get technical (which was incorporated in 1995... same year that 1st Tacoma came out) but for anyone that didn’t grow up in my home town—or in and around the south Puget Sound—I grew up in Tacoma. TacTown what up!

(Quick side note: because I grew up in Tacoma, it has taken me a while since I bought the truck to come around to the nomenclature of calling them “tacos”. I understand that they are, indeed, tacos—and I’m not a mission to change that—but to me, they are Tacomas.)

Ever since I was little and saw Back to the Future, there was a seed planted in me that I wanted a cool truck. I remember that seed was cultivated when Toyota came out with the Tacoma because it quickly became the vehicle I would “dibs” the shit out of as a small boy, riding around town with my mom and sister. That, and the Mazda Miata. Especially if it was red. My little sister and I would fight so bad if one of us dibbed that little red racer before the other. You better believe my head was on a swivel anytime we were at an intersection. I even remembered the places of business where people parked daily, so I could dib them on the way to grocery store. Naturally, as I was on high alert to spot every single one of them, by turn, my little sister would make it a point to dib a Tacoma so I would feel the pain and shame of not being quick enough to also dib that sweet pickup.

Fast-forward to college. I’m broke, obviously, and the go-to vehicle that every. Single. Tool bag of douch is non-other than 2nd gen Tacoma with those black XD rims with the star in the middle. It was at epidemic levels. Bright blue too. Someone at the asshat factory just coded that particular Tacoma build in the DNA of these clown shoe wearing bros and left a weight sitting on the print button.

And the Tacoma was ruined for me.

I no longer liked Tacoma’s. Blasphemy I know... but it is the truth. They were ruined for me for years.

But time heals all wounds and many years later, my brother ends up buying a used 2nd gen for my niece who just got her drivers license. A sweet one too. Access cab, silver, lifted with wheels. The exact truck I would have killed for in high school. And then all of the feels came rushing back. The love was rekindled.

Which is why I am proud to report, just as I am sure many of you other Tacoma owners on this board are, that my wife and I went out fully committed to buy a Subaru two weeks ago and fully executed on said plan with the purchase of a 2018 DCSB OR in classy MGM.

    Welcome!

I also love Miata's. I plan to buy one when my truck is paid off.

That it was ours. We owned it and it was our mental property, simply by seeing it calling out, “Dibs on that XXXX”. Like a land claim in the 1800s, but instead, cool cars you saw while your mom drove you to grocery store.

When I grew up, I had a very strong distaste for Tacoma's and their perceived owners, but I have also come around and seen the light (but am still waiting to purchase).
