Step side Tacoma?

Never knew these were a thing just thought I’d share a pic I snapped of one I saw sitting in traffic this morning.

 

Yeah, they aren't too common but they are around.

Ugly as sin IMO. Same with the Tundras of that generation.

 

I have one and they are completely different than the Tundra version. You are correct... the Tundra version was hideous at best IMO.

The back of the stepside Tundra looks the back end of one of those new Lincoln hearses, but with the back half of the roof chopped off!

The stepside tundra are hideous but I like the Tacoma's.

 

I would love to have one. But I didnt get one because I hear you are totally screwed if you get rear ended or side-swiped. Apparently you cant get any bed related body panels from Toyota or aftermarket sources anymore.

 

If I owned one of these, got hit, and had no frame damage or any other structural damage, I'd just put a regular bed on it. No need to write off an otherwise good truck!

Yeah you could do that. But I love they way they look, so it would end up as a lawn ornament if I had one. A clean 4x4 version with 120k on it popped up for sale shortly after I bought my '04. Kinda made me mad.

The beds are very hard to find. God forbid but if I ever crashed mine I would just go back with a normal bed. The only thing I don't like about the stepside is there isn't much room to carry stuff.

 

I live about a mile from you actually and was curious if you were a member here. Good to see that you are. How did you get the 3rd gen tailgate look on there. Looks awesome!

 

They do exist as we have one, though I don't see many of them on the road.

 

As a diehard 1st gen guy, I do have to admit that at least the 2nd/3rd gens did away with the stepsides.

Stepsides *could* look good, but it just seems like Toyota did it as an after thought.
