My son's adventure yesterday-I've never seen the CV pull out of the diff. Will see what is needed this afternoon.

He was going to buy tires today. Hopefully he'll only need the CV and not much more.

Lower ball joint failure?? Pretty common on first gen tacomas and 3rd gen 4Runners. Make sure you get OEM LBJs and new bolts that are loctite'd and torqued properly. Shouldn't run into this issue for good while but just keep checking on them every few months to be safe.

I'd also check the upper ball joint and brake line to make sure nothing else has happened. Other than new CV and LBJ's you should be good to go. But definitely replace the other side LBJ so it doesn't happen again.

    It could've been worse:

Edit: Also check out the tie-rods and steering rack, may need to replace those. Just too hard to tell based on those pics.

Let me know if you need help with any of it as I'm fairly knowledgeable about that suspension

Yep, ball joint sheared. fortunately, he was offroad and crawling in 4 lo/first when it happened, so it seems like all else is o.k.

So the CV will need to be replaced? I thought it would, but searching didn't indicate that it would for sure.

steering rack needs replaced anyway- very squeaky.

Odd thing is that I replaced the tie rod ends and the LBJ's about 70K ago. I don't recall where I bought them , but may have been Moog.

The truck has 350K on it, so it's in it's golden years anyway.

Yup CV will need to be replaced, here's a CL ad for some

As for the steering rack if he doesn't go off-roading you won't need an OEM if you don't want to.

That's odd about the LBJs but could've been Moog not real sure I'd have to look at them or see a picture to determine. But glad he is alright and was going slow

If the CV was torn out of the diff then I could see the ADD tube being damaged as well...check the splines on the end that was in the diff and see what they look like, if they're bashed and bented and torn up, then you can probably guess what the inside of the tube looks like

Will definitely need new LBJs and probably tie rods...go OEM on those parts. Some debate on here about that but OEM is best hands down.

The ball joint design on these trucks is notoriously fragile and a well-known weak point on them...with OEM parts at least you know you're getting the best quality.

Luckily he wasn't on the road when this happened...one of my worst fears is having this happen to me when I'm coming down a winding mountain from one of my wheeling trips.

Thanks for this guys. I've sent him links to this thread and to the craigslist ad for the CV's.
