It -might- be to help balance the wheel. The stem adds that small amount, thus they remove an equally small amount of steel (between holes = result is an oval).

That 16” wheel is used in the global market on several other Toyota vehicle makes as the standard wheel. The 70 series LC gets that wheel as standard equipment in South Africa for example. They do have TPMS in factory spec in that case.

    AFAIK that's right.

These types would standard on the Hilux/Prado.

These I think are standard on 200 series.

I think the 70 series gets split rims standard, though.

Correction for my earlier post the Hilux Revo gets these or similar wheels. Depends on the trim package. The 70 uses the 5 on 5 patern wheels. I know I have personally seen the slotted hole wheels on new Hilux trucks sitting on the dealer lots in the Philippines and Indonesia.

I thought it was so the valve stem could be accessed when the tire is in the spare location since its mounted upside down. For checking pressure and stuff. :notsure:

TPMS and accessing the stem are both sensible, but I still wonder why then is it only that one wheel is like this and not all of Toyota's standard steel wheels? The TPMS could be market-driven, since they aren't mandatory everywhere and in markets that use them nicer steels or alloys are probably more common. But getting at the stem on a spare is pretty universal. Maybe market driven, too. Since a place that would get multi-hole steels would also get trucks with swing-outs and not have spares mounted underneath as often.
