I took my Taco in today for the latest AT TSB. The tech found this harness. It plugs into the OBD port, has wires that go into the dash, and a OBD style connector that goes into the original OBD bracket. The tech stated he found it when he plugged into the OBD port and got no voltage.

My thoughts are the Port installed glass break sensor. I confirmed it was port installed via the Toyota owners vin lookup. I have not added anything to the electrical system other than the pop-n-lock, but it is not in that area.

    What hasn't been modified?
    Tracker?
    Remote start?
Aftermarket radio that gives engine info?
    Aftermarket engine monitors?

Where do the wires that go into the dash go?

Nothing. All stock as I received it. The pop-n-lock is in the passenger kick panel. This is on the drivers side, under the steering wheel at the OBD port

Bought new in May 2017. Here is the optional equipment list off of Toyota’s website

Looking at the Electrical Diagrams I have the Factory Glass breakage sensor does not get tied into the OBD wish I could share the drawings but on a CD and need a "key" to view the CD, Anyways that is a very typical way that Repo and "Buy now pay here" place install a GPS monitor / Vehicle disable module.

A quick way to check is on the Driver's side front window pillar carefully open the Plastic Trim (if you have a grab handle take that off first) and a GPS / Disable module might be under there they normally are about 4.5" X 2.5" X .75" in size. other wise there should not be anything under there except the wires that go to your map, visor lights and no more than 4 wires show in the diagram

It’s not the Toyota glass break sensor. That plugs into the alarm module, drivers kick panel, not ODB2 port.

I purchased it at Precision Toyota of Tucson. I financed through my credit union, not them. The black connector is marked OBD-II. The tech disconnected it, but I had him plug it back up. I tested the glass break afterwards. I’ll try and disconnect it and see if it still works. Something is fishy if it’s not allowing voltage to the tech computer

It’s probably not supplying voltage to the ODB2 port because what ever is at the end of the cables going virtually is taking it. Follow them up and find out what’s at the end.

You guys are awesome. Unplugged it, tested the GPS, still worked. Pulled the A pillar cover, nothing. Got on my back followed the wires, pulled and found this contraption. I’m thinking GPS tracker.

    Thank you

It is a gps tracker. You can do a search on the FCC ID number.

A google search showed they are used by buy here pay here car lots to keep track of their cars. Kind of odd to see on a new truck financed through a credit union

Looks like a "special finance" device. We install similar devices at our dealer for credit challenged buyers, although ours are hard wired and tapped into the starter circuit. No pay=no start!

Luckily for me, the one they used plugged into the obd port so I didn’t have to unsplice wires or replace the harness. I need to call and find out why they put it on.

I also wonder if there are are privacy issues. They knew I was paying with a check from my credit union and registering it out of AZ. I read all the documents, they fedex’d them to me in advance & I didn’t sign a consent to gps monitoring

You do have legal cause against whom ever you bought the truck from for privacy violation issues, so you may want to have them pay to have the rest of the truck checked out by a third party at a minimum. If nothing else, an extended warranty period for the trouble and angst.
