Question for you guys. If I was to switch to an AGM, do I have to change anything? I thought I read before something about charging being different than flooded. Thanks for any help.

Mine went kaput at 10,000 miles and replaced it with a quality battery from Advance Auto. Toyota reimbursed me for the entire price I paid. Much better than a replacement battery from dealership so it would go out again at 20,000.

I'm at 34,000 miles. Noticed the battery is seeping so took it to the dealing to try and get it replaced. They said the battery tested good so they wouldn't replace. I asked about the seeping and they said you have probably been offroading which caused it to spill over.

Thanks everyone for their input... I posted before that the dealership replaced, but I did not mention they replaced with a TruStart battery... Also, had no leaking before or any signs of trouble at all before it failed. I drive 60 miles round trip daily. The night before it failed, the battery started strongly, and without hesitation and then the next morning it was dead in the water. I am in Texas, so I am aware that the heat will kill my battery sooner than later, but I've been in Texas for 21 years, so I'm not new to the concept. I just had to replace the battery in my daughter's Focus after 4 years and 49k miles.

I went in for my 15,000 mile floor mat inspection today... I told the receptionist at the service dept that the battery was leaking...
When I went in to pick my truck up I was informed that the battery was fine. (Topped off the juice and checked out at full charge) I informed her that a leaky battery is not at all "fine"
She took back my key and paperwork...Ten minutes later I picked up my truck with a new 84 month TRUSTART. They also replaced the Neg cable since it was starting to rust.
They cleaned up my hold down bracket that had also started to rust.

Why do people post their mileage with battery failure? Mileage has absolutely nothing to do with battery life.

its probably because most car batteries or battery parts are made in China, so blame the ones that are allowing the Chinese to flood our markets with low quality garbage and putting out of business those quality manufactorers who cannot compete monetarily with slave labor manufactured goods

It's assumptions like these that need to be called out.
    1) If you look through the entire thread, the manufacturer of Tacoma batteries is Johnson Controls, a US company with US manufacturing locations for US OEMs. Because batteries are heavy and hazmat, it is unlikely that a Johnson Controls battery would be shipped from overseas when US locations exist.
    2) Depending on time period, you may have a 28800-03044 or a 28800-03045, both of which are 24F. The part number change could imply slight differences internally (which would affect performance)
    3) Looking across numerous car manufacturer complaints, forums, JD Power information, etc... .batteries are dying quickly and frequently across the board; it is not unique to Toyota.
    4) Mileage in itself is not an indicating factor of life, but it's how those miles are driven (are you getting to the proper MPH/RPM to engage the alternator regularly?).
    5) Take care of your batteries. If you're away, having them driven "once a week to work" likely isn't good enough. Use a battery tender/trickle charger to maintain proper voltage

Purchasing a 2nd gen tray for when I know I'll need a replacement. Sorry if it's mentioned, I've seen it asked but didn't see responses, a 27f will fit in the 3rd gen with no modification other than the tray, correct?

All I can say about the OEM battery is that I'm surprised how cheap they are in such an expensive truck. I don't know about anyone else but mine is not even a maintenance free. I'll have to check the fluid level in it regularly...not!!! I'll be changing it out with a new AGM sealed unit very shortly as going off road with the OEM is asking for trouble. Non maintenance frees have a tendency to puke fluid out the caps when going over bumps, steep grades etc..they like to be level at all times and we know these trucks like offroading. Toyota didn't think the battery issue out very well.

Yes, it fits without modifications... other than the tray. See post #11 on the first page of the thread.

Thats a spendy one. I want to get a sealed battery, but will probably go for something a little more economical. Thanks for the heads on the fitment.

Where did you purchase your tray from?

Ordered mine from OEMPartSource, part number 74431-0C020 as they had the best price at the time

You can Google that part number, lots of places have it evenAmazon but the OEM place is still currently cheaper

What is the P/N for your Trustart? Did they swap in a different tray or change the hold down clamp? A pic would be nice. I'm intrigued

Mine just died at exactly 20k miles. Real glad to know Toyota cheaped out on the battery.
