Yeah it's noticeable and mine rattle a little. I don't know if I'm imagining it but I swear to god I have a harder time maintaining highway speed when they're out versus folded away, the wind drag is a huge factor on these trucks. Folded away there's no noticeable from them though

I'm a Ford guy also; former owner of a Mustang GT, LX 5.0, and Cobra. Most of my friends back home drive F-150s, and from my perspective, Chevys and Dodges just fall apart over time. If you have the V8, I wouldn't worry, but the turbo models seem to crap out around 100k miles. Ford is really setting the bar with their turbo technology; they just need to work on long term quality.

Haven’t owned a ford truck but came from performance sedans and picked up a 18 cement Trd I love it for the most part other than the adjustment. I can not get use to this motors acceleration and trans combo it’s a dog. Feel like I am flooring it everywhere to get speed. And the for some reason the engine noise got to me at first sounded like a damn small diesel. And the cabin noise is loud. Other than that it’s great just wish they would address the few things. You will prob miss the space is you have kids ect

Yeah they talked me into getting the twin turbo ecoboost, great engine with crazy pick up... but the reliability seems to be giving out on me. Would like to get back in a truck knowing I can go for 300k without a problem... don't know how well these third gens hold up though, I'm sure someone out there has a shit ton of mileage on one

If you need to tow big trailer regularly, keep the Ford.

Not to mention F150 has some of the worst depreciation on the market, and you’ll eat that hard if you trade it in so soon.

This would be a different story if you said, “thinking of buying a new truck, should I get an f150 or Tacoma?” But since you already bought an F150 then financially it’s a completely different discussion.

^^There’s your answer. If you’re towing in a regular basis then Taco isn’t for you. Wait until 2020 when Toyota will be forced to put a new engine/trans combo together. The new Ranger is going to have more HP, torque and giddy-up than Taco or Colorado. It will put a dent in Taco sales and being the best in a mediocre bunch won’t be good enough any longer.

For the record, I love my Taco. I’ve had/have many of the issues that many 3rd gen owners report. I will be intrigued by the new Ranger but want to wait a couple of years to see how that 10 speed trans holds up and if the turbo 4-banger can handle the midsize truck weight and needs.

Worst depreciation? Have you looked recently? It’s a pro-truck market right now. All trucks are selling very well. Depreciation is minimal even for F150’s.

Plenty of ecoboost trucks out there with 100k plus miles. Having said that I was never confident my 15’ FX4 would hold up too well. After replacing timing chain, driveshaft, exhaust system, trans valve body, many road force balances and trips to the shop for ongoing vibrations and problems I gave it up at 24k miles.
Lost about $9k in value upon trade in.
I’m way happier with the Tacoma not as comfortable and no way near as much power but it just feels better built, holds good value, it’s fun to drive and continue to buy crap for it that I don’t need but that’s part of the culture in owning a Taco/Toyota....F150’s still catch my eye but not enough to buy other one haha

I agree also with the comparison between the Tacoma and f150's. I love all the bells and whistles on the plati, but I feel like I've been trying to keep up with them rather than enjoying it all.

Taco's simplicity is great with even some newer additions as well

I wouldn’t hold your breath on the new Ranger blowing you away. I say this as a former engineer for the truck team at Ford. It may be faster, but the specs I’ve seen don’t exactly set it heads and shoulders higher. There were some interesting drivetrain configurations being considered, but the bean counters already nixed all of that. The price is also going to be high enough that I don’t see it doing particularly well for that reason alone, unless they are going into it already expecting to give 5k-7k in rebates right off the bat.

Edit: take a look at this to see what the pricing is going to be like https://shop.ford.com/build/ranger/#/select/

Thanks for the insight. I also think that Ford will be offering rebates to attract potential buyers with "savings". The truck looks "soft", as in the front end looks like it belongs on a sedan rather than a truck.

OP I recall you had said you fear taking your Ford Off-Road, I get that as MANY truck owners simply like having the size, 4X4, truck bed, and ton's of features...it's a living room on wheels. For me going from a Tundra to a Tacoma, within 3 weeks of ownership I had the Tacoma on the trails of Maine going up & down slate rock hills with ease. It is still a $40K truck at the end of the day and not a toy so you will worry, for me it felt like a giant ATV and was a blast!

KBB gives the Tacoma #1 rankings for 2018 values, ABOVE even the Jeep

I’m an F150 homer for sure. I’ve had 2 new F150s, love them. (Should’ve never gotten rid of the first one, but was craving a diesel)

I just went thru the Ford site and priced out a Ford Ranger XL (XLT with same options and a few more $40-41K) that was close to my Tacoma TRD OR and it comes in around $36-37K though some key features missing is the 6 foot bed with ANY model if you want the Super Crew Cab (Double Cab Tacoma speak) so that right there is a NO for me until they change that, and no power sliding rear glass sucks...not to mention a lot of other items.

Priced out with the FX4 Off-Road Package & exclusive Saber STX color package along with the Trailer Tow & Tech Package

And yet the F-150 in that config has roughly enough rear cab area to set up a ping pong table, while hauling a portable pool. Different trucks, different purposes. If you compare them without acknowledging the built in differences you don't have a lot of context. It would be the same if you sat down with an F-150 (that wasn't a Raptor) and said "I want to build the ultimate off-road config". You'd come up way short of the capabilities of a Tacoma because you can't get rid of the extra cubic feet.

Nothing wrong with the Fords, nothing wrong with our Tacos, they are just aimed at different audiences.

Although I think we can all agree F those Nissan guys! (j/k)
