Oil?

Okay guys, I have been trying to convince myself to change to Mobile 1 but I have been using Valvoline Durablend since I was in high school and in my 97 it has 130K and still runs perfect. My concern (and I don't know that much about full synthetics) is that after the engine gets some miles on it they tend to leak. Is this true? I use the Napa Gold filters because I like Wix so what I am looking for is a reason the switch. Thanks

 

Is this for your 97 or your 07?

I purchased my 96 when it had 60K miles and I immediately switched over to full synthetics. I had the truck for 5 years and it always ran great. I wouldn't necessarily call it a leak - but more of a 'sweating' around the oil pan bolts. I lost about 1/2 quart of oil every 5K miles.

Every vehicle will react differently to the usage of synthetics. You have to remember that synthetics tend to penetrate better than regular oils AND synthetics act as *cleansers* more so than regular oil. So - if you have an oil that's penetrating further and cleaning....you're getting better lubrication plus the chance of creating leaks. It's a trade-off.

I bought my Jeep Wrangler 4.0L with 85k miles on it and switched over to synthetic. No leaks, no sweating, and no loss of oil. But....I developed a lifter tap (when its cold) after using synthetics for a bit. Go figure...

I continue to run synthetics regardless of the after affects...

 

If you're going to run synthetic Mobil 1 is the way to go. I run it in my 3000GT, and so do the majority of the other owners.

 

Yeah I hear what you guys are saying. This is for the new truck and for me its just hard to switch after having such awesome performance from the Durablend. In the 97 it does not leak or burn oil but I know how vehicles change. For me I can't stand leaks so for now I am thinking that the Valvoline is the best to stick with. I am a don't fix it if it aint broke kind of guy, and the thought of leaking a couple years from now is just not apealing to me. Thanks for the comments, I will let this thread run for a few days to see the results.

 

I'm guessing Durablend is a synthetic blend oil? If you've been running that for a little while I'm sure you'd be fine switching to full synthetic. You're actually supposed to run blend for a two or three oil changes before you switch to full sythetic.

If you start putting synthetic oil in the new truck - you shouldn't have any problems with leaks at all.

It's when you've been running regular oil in a vehicle for 10 years (for example) and you suddenly start using synthetics..... that's when the leaking can start to occur.

 

I have used Quakerstate 30w in the winter and 20w50 in the summer in everything Ive owned for the past 20 years. Its worked out great, perfectly clean engines after as much as 370000 miles on my 280z. I went thru the same delima when I got my Taco. I couldnt run my old weight oil anyway, and so many swear that synthetics are the way to go. I finally did make the switch, yet to soon really to see any changes. I use high end full synthetic in all of my 2 stroke engines and love it.

 

My old accord (98) had like 145k miles on it when i started using Castrol Syntec 0W-30 and I had no problems with leaking at all, and i'm planning on switching to that in my Tacoma with 58k miles too at my next oil change

 

New truck, go synthetic. Old truck, why change?

 

When do you go synthetic with a new truck? I've heard various schools of thought on this, anywhere from 1000 to 15000 miles. Some say you've got to let the engine break in first or to start ASAP.

 

I switched to Mobile1 in my 02 the 1st time I changed the oil. I bought it used so that switch was at 105,000 miles. I have no oil leaks and the engine doesn't burn oil either. I now have 126,000 miles and still no issues involving the oil.

 

Mobil 1 75W90 Gear Oil: Front Diff, Transfer Case, 6-speed, Rear Diff.

Mobil 1 5W30 Fully Synthetic Oil: Crankcase

Mobil 1 Oil Filter: M-202 (like 102, but longer, more capacity)

I did my first oil change at 1500 miles, same with my previous new vehicles, and went right to synthetic. I can't speak to longevity because the Tacoma only has 14,000 miles and the previous vehicle had 29,000 when I traded it. As I understand it, there are no detrimental effects in going to synthetic right away. Check out bobistheoilguy.com. Good forum with lots of info there.

BTW, I use Pennzoil Platinum. Less than $20 for a 5qt jug at WalMart. Can't beat it.

you got the m1-202 listed, but i always thought it was the m1-209 that was a little bigger than than the

you are correct, M1-209 is the larger filter.

That's what I've been using for the last 3 oil changes.

 

ok, cool. thats what i was thinking.

so, with the m1-209 filter, how much extra oil can you add to the crank case......half a quart?? if so, im gonna start using 6 quarts of the mobil1 5w30 and a m1-209 filter myself on the 04 i have....since it uses the same filter as the new tacomas v6.

 

I have an Audi, Tacoma and RX7 racecar and I never remember the capacities.

I usually add 5.5 quarts, then check the dipstick, add a little more, start the truck, warm it up, turn if off, then check again.

6 sounds right.

 

5.2 according to the manual.

 

yup mine takes 5.2 on the button.

 

I usually end up with about 1/3-1/4 of my 6th quart left over.
