just curious here... so I have a 2018 Tacoma with a bad "diff howl" (it appears to be a fairly common characteristic of these trucks). I want to sell the truck. If I go to kbb.com and see the price range of a used, private party sale 2018 TRD OR with 2k miles, what would you expect I could sell the truck for?

Could I get the top dollar amount? Could I even get the lowest amount?

What say you, Tacoma World? Like new condition btw. Caught between a rock and a hard place here. The sound is driving me crazy.

Mine doesn’t howl, but couldn’t you have the dealer fix it?

I've been asking Toyota to fix it for nearly two months (since I bought the truck). They tried once and the "fix" didn't work.

You need to take it to a different dealer or escalate the issue to corporate. Definitely a covered item, even if they have to replace the entire diff. Unfortunately some dealers are better than others.

I got the TSB done about a week ago. No more howl!! and I believe as long as you don't have DCLB you get new leaf springs!!!

My understanding of the diff howl is that it is a vibration issue between the diff, leafs and tire rotation. Change any one of those things to a different spec and it goes away. Again, from what I understand. I have a minor whine between 50 and 60 mph, but nothing I would call a howl so I am ignoring it at this time. Swapping tires to go up a size seems to be the cheapest option.

Still lame to have to do this on a brand new truck, but it'll be cheaper than the the hit you'll take re-selling it.

Go back to the servicing dealer with the same complaint. Ask them if there is a fix as this is the second time it's been in for the same complaint. Let them fix it.

You will never get what you put into the truck so trading/selling is not the best idea. But if you want, go to KBB-but because the rear end howls, it's not in excellent or like new condition. Then look to see what craigslist, Carmax, and other sites are asking for the same vehicle. Again, the howl is a huge problem so you'll have to figure out what it will cost to fix it and take that off whatever price you arrive at to get your selling price. Very likely, it's going to be less than the lower amount.

How long have you owned it? If less than a year, take it back until you've been back 4 times. If they cannot fix it, lemon law the thing. In NM, you get 1 year or until the end of the warranty. Which ever comes first.

That is what I did swap the tires for a bigger size and I barley hear the howl. It did not fix the problem but it did make decrease the howl noise

Regarding the resale value, the first year is when you'll take the biggest hit. Not a lot of people will want your truck that's priced $1k below a brand new one, despite the low mileage. Expect to lose at least about $2k at best (IMO). And that's not counting taxes you paid.

Have you looked into trading it in or have you talked to a lawyer regarding the lemon law, if you have one in your state?

    I feel your pain man!

Install a light bar and some knobby tires, and embrace the fact that your truck is loud?

Maybe use some heavy duty grease on your rear suspension to dampen some of the vibrations?

That sucks as I am in the same boat and thought of doing the same, but havent checked on trade values.

Have you talked to corporate again or are they sticking to "trait of the truck" talk?

And I am surprised by the responses of those stating "it's a truck" or that go along with ignoring the sound. This is an issue one way or another that Toyota needs to fix and address. If it is a faulty part it could finish coming apart after your warranty is over. If it is a resonance issue, what is resonating and could this cause the metal to fatigue to the point of failure? These trucks cost too much money to just say: "hell with it".

Well I had 2018 TRD Sport 4x4 DCSB for 4 weeks with a lot of problems (5 to be exact) and traded it in for $31,500 and got the PRO two weeks ago.

Yeah I've talked to corporate. Twice they've given me the "it's normal". But dealer continued to tell them it wasn't normal. It's still a back and forth game after two months. Agreed- too much money to say "hell with it".

Buy the $110 TSB parts and install it yourself if the dealer is non cooperative.

Takes less than an hour and no need to jack up the truck or remove the backseat (you can push the foam sound deadner into place without removing the seat back).

I have installed the tsb on a neighbor’s and a niece’s out of warranty trucks with pretty good results (reduced whine by 50%-75%). I did not replace the leaf springs.
