I've seen those units before, and they are without a doubt the best bang for your buck. I'm surprised you don't make a 50ah battery given how cheap the supplies are. I believe the Bixpy and Torqeedo standard batteries work out to around 25ah, but Torqeedo now offers a battery double in size that I know a lot of people are using. I'm definitely interested to see your final setup.

Honest question. I really am not taking a shot at kayaks. Why get a kayak when a jon boat is the same weight and possibly even drafts the same? Arguably, even much cheaper.

Everyone has different reasons, but here’s my take. I’ve fished from boats my entire life and discovered I liked kayak fishing maybe 10 years ago. In that time I’ve basically taken my boat fishing trips down to zero and exclusively fish from a kayak now. I believe I catch more fish for many different reasons, but mainly I pay more attention to my surroundings and work areas instead of spots. Kayaks are stealthy which is really important for certain species/conditions, not so much for others. The kayak fishing community is a huge perk as well. People are way more laid back, willing to trade information, and we generally fish together which makes for more fun. In addition my current house has no parking for a trailer of any size, so a boat is out of the question anyway. I keep my kayak fully rigged in my car port on a pulley system above our vehicles, meaning they take up no extra space. This also allows me to lower my boat and load it into my truck or walk across the street to our community beach 100 yards away into the Chesapeake in a matter of minutes. I use my kayaks more than any boat, and I really enjoy the quiet time on the water almost as much as I like catching fish. On top of all that, it’s great exercise.

PS: a Jon boat with outboard is way cheaper ;)

That makes sense to me. Thank you for a thoughtful response. I guess I have not gotten past the price tag on some of these kayaks. Looks cool though.

Thx. I've never had a yak. I have been fishing from bass boats for 30 yrs and owned many of them over the years tournament fishing. I got out of it back in 2012 and got a 17 ft alum bass boat and sold it two years later and don't see needing boat anymore. If I want to go buddy has bass boat I can go tournament fish or fun fish pretty much a lot. Lakes just got too busy for me and too many people on lakes here everywhere. I thought about getting something like this to just take to river or creeks or ponds to mess around some mornings on weekends and wouldn't have 50k plus tied up in garage not counting all other expenses

The price appears high, but I think you’ll find the reward high too.

My next planned trip is down to CBBT for sheeps and spades, and you’re welcome to join us. That’s an overnight trip for sure and the reason my taco thinks it’s a camper.

I’ve actually never caught a weakfish, but they are around in Jamaica Bay where we used to do a tournament every year. I’m not a tournament fisherman, but I loved that one for the location, price, and fellow kayak anglers. The last year they had it was 2017 and there were at least 400 participants. There is another similar event near me in Oct I plan on attending for the first time this year. It’s another multi day tournament out of Kent island and I already know lots of people that go to that every year.

You should come check it out too.

You wouldn’t be the first or last person to replace their boat with a kayak, and maybe like it better too ;)

I’ve seen the Compass in action and it is the best value Hobie offers for sure, and maybe one of the best period. I’d say it’s more of a cross between the Outback and Revo, which is a sweet spot to be. My next purchase will be a TI (tandem island) for taking my kids out sailing and/or fishing, but I need a bigger house first!

I agree. I was in the market for an outback but as soon as I heard the compass was being released, I waited. With all I’ve done/added to the compass, I’m in outback price territory but I’ve got no complaints. For me, it’s a better platform...

Go with large gauge wire. I keep splicing in things back here to the point I wish I would have ran a larger wire. Any more and I'll be running a new wire anyway.

Installed a new FRS/GMRS radio, and since my old cellular booster is in the same vicinity I'll update that as well. GMRS radio is a new release from Midland, the MXT275 https://midlandusa.com/product/mxt275-micromobile-two-way-radio/. My cell phone booster is fairly old and in it's third vehicle, but it still works amazingly well. I believe it to be a Wilson WA801212F kit that has since been updated with newer versions. I was using the cell phone mount antenna in the previous F-150, but I like the adhesive antenna I used here much better (black rectangle attached to center console). Most of the new kits I've seen only include the adhesive antenna. The external magnetic antennas are still exactly the same.

The Wilson unit is mounted under the rear passenger seat, and I have the 12V plug going into the center console outlet to switch on/off. I may hardwire this in someday, but I'm not using the console outlet for anything else and this was easy.

Edit: 24”, not 34”. That would be a damn world record by 6” probably, haha.

Just got an official weight, 12.9 lbs!

Lots of little mods to catch up on. I've got a finished photo of the CB/GMRS radio installs. I still need to tune the CB, but both work great. Had my first GMRS conversation last weekend with a group traveling south on I95, and my first verbal altercation with a truck driver on the way back over the CB, haha. Also, finished my cell phone setup by adding an always on USB charging port to the rear view mirror. From that I can power my phone or GoPro. The only eyesore is the regulator box, which is taped to the windshield with all the wires tucked in. It didn't fit under the headliner without bulging, plus it was ventilated so I figured it best to have a supply of air. The last improvement are vent shades which I'm very excited about. I've been wanting some for a while, but didn't find "the ones" until a couple days ago. These are everything I was looking for, in-channel mount, lo-profile, and matte finish. Other than removing the AVS logo I think they are perfect.
