What do you guys know/hear about Toyota's WS (World Standard - ?) auto trans fluid? I believe I recently saw a thread about it being crap compared to others like Dexron VI, Mercon V, etc. As I recall, the thread showed a guy with broken trans parts in his hands when he was towing. He says the fluid broken down and no longer provided lubrication. If I switch, then what to? I'm thinking of Red Line D6.

I can't speak for the quality of Toyota's WS fluid, but if I was looking to replace it, either Redline D6, or Amsoil's Signature Series "fuel efficient" fluid would be my choice.

Uh...okay. But what does your build have to do with my question about Toyota's auto trans fluid?

Not yet able to replace all of the auto fluid with something of quality (like Red Line D6, etc), I added a bottle of LubeGuard Platinum auto fluid treatment today. I don't know if it's something that I just want to feel, but I have to say it does "seem" to shift smoother. I'll see over time.

You may have seen one failure, but there are far more toyota transmissions surviving out there percentage-wise than any chevy/dodge or ford trans. The fluid is not the weak point. It's already a synthetic and there's no reason to switch or contaminate it with another fluid.

Okay, I get your point, but please understand that the LubeGuard I added is just an additive, not a fixer. It's for all auto fluids to improve them. My O/P was to seek out any others who may have experienced poor performance with the WS auto fluid - and I am still looking. And by the way, there are many "types" of synthetics, some far better than others.

I don't want people focusing on one possible failure. WS is not a weak point on Toyotas, putting snake oils in the fluid won't change anything.

I have worked on Toyota's since 2005, and I haven't seen a lubrication failure due to WS yet. The older models with DIII or TIV had less tolerances of temperature. There is better transmission fluids, but it doesn't mean it was engineered for the vehicle.

The worst transmission failures that use WS are the early Tundra 5.7's and the Camry/Rav4 2.5 with the torque converter shudder.

I've seen maybe 4 tacoma/4runner WS trans fail over my years, usually due to super high miles or neglect. The 4 cylinder I have yet to ever see failure.

I'm saying what we have is very good and not to be concerned. Especially if you stay on top of maintenance. Go ahead and put whatever you want in it, but I encourage everyone do use their discretion.

THAT'S IT! Thanks! I knew I had read evidence that Toyota's WS auto fluid is very poor at higher temps and not just from one person's experience - but from years at his shop and the data he collected from given sources. Yeah, I'm getting mine flushed out and changed.
