I would agree with you about the 3 leaf and a constant load not being ideal. They are better than nothing though. A 10% of nothing loss of payload without the overload wouldn't worry me. Toyotas can't even support the payload off the stops with the overload in. When my neighbor was young, he went to a mason yard to get sand or something with his F-100. He was worried that the springs would not support the weight. His solution... cut 4x4 blocks to fit between the frame and the axel. Bottoming out and spring sagging are decades old problems for which there have been many band aid fixes including air shocks and bags, load leveling shocks, overload leaf springs and coils. and add a leaf products. Load leveling shocks claim to add 660 extra pounds of load support per pair. I used them on my sagging '65 Mustang leaf springs and they really picked up the rear end. There are many ways to skin the cat. Budget is usually the deciding factor. I had the cheap Helwig EZ whatever on my truck ....useless and uncomfortable ride.

I also wonder if the situation with broken Toyota leaves is a thing of the past. Has anybody experienced this recently? I haven't..... yet.

By the way T4RFTMFW. Did I read your post right? You went from the 3 leaf to Dakars of some type and now need to add air bags too? What Dakars do you have and what do you carry? I'm really curious.

I went from OEM 3 leaf, to same with 3 leaf progressive AAL (retained overload leaf), to Dakars.

Truck met an unfortunate parking situation and was later totaled in early 2017.

Dakars only came in one flavor back then. I had a 250 lb constant load and carried loads generally ranging in the 300-900 lbs range, not including the original 250.

I see, thanks for the info. Sounds like reasonable use to me, certainly should not be a strain for suspension.
