Isolated incidents versus having to look at that tiny screen everyday. :)

I’ll remember that super small torque curve as I pull away from my buddies 5th gen t4r every afternoon.

Piggybacking on that torque curve. A 3rd gen Tacoma has an average 0-60 time of 7 seconds in comparison to 8 seconds on a 5th gen 4Runner.

    But those extra liters though.....

Yeah, no on the 4R. I need a bed to throw shit into. I will not hook up a trailer EVERY fucking time I have to haul shit (gas, garbage, tools, lumber, mulch, loam, dirt bikes, you name it. How often do I haul stuff, 4 to 5 days a week, so fuck the trailer thing. Yes, I own two trailers as well, but hooking up doing the trip, unhooking them, parking them in the lower driveway - yeah no need a bed. But, you do not need a bed, why own a pickup o_O

    Yeah.
I don't hate my truck at all, and I think the 3.5L is a great motor. Call it a Camry motor if you want, but it's from the same engine family as the 4.0 and is a much more advanced and refined motor. I'm actually surprised the Tacoma got it before the 4Runner. Looks like the 4Runner will get it in a couple of years, though, so you 4.0 lovers need to plan a purchase soon.

I do like having a truck to use for hauling messy stuff and tall stuff that won't fit in either of the 4Runners. But the 4Runners are great for hauling stuff that you don't want to expose to the elements, and with the seats down it holds a lot. I just wouldn't put a load of mulch in the back of one.

My in-laws have been driving various Lexus vehicles, and even they commented that our 4Runner Limited feels like the same level of quality as their Lexus vehicles. I don't consider the Tacoma to have poor quality, but it's not on the same level.

As far as driving position, comfort, and room for tall people, I can't say I notice much difference, but I'm 5'11". I just have to remember to hit the #2 button before getting in since my wife is only 5' tall.

ARE cap, wade inchannel vent visors, weathertec floor mats, ranch hand grill guard, tuffy security boxes in bed, lockable tailgate handle. Still have stuff that needs to be installed and still have stuff ordered lol.
i been thinking about switching also
tired of family complaining no room in back seat, also complaining on hot days
that theres no vents for a/c in back seat. but the bed does hold everything when
they want to go to cosco lol

If you get the 4-runner do yourself a favor and get the limited's full-time 4wd.
This is the same system that's been use in the land crusier for decades

The trd models are for little boys

I can't blame anyone for wanting either vehicle. I have a 17 Tacoma TRD OR and my wife has a 17 4Runner Limited and I like both of them, but they are very different. The 4Runner feels like it has better fit and finish than the Tacoma, but I don't think there's a huge difference in material quality in the vehicle. It's all mostly plastic anyway. The reason I think the fit and finish is better in the 4Runner, is after a year and half, the 4Runner doesn't have any ticks or rattles from the interior. My Tacoma is almost a year old and it has quite a few. Mostly from the different pieces not fitting perfectly together. I'm working on fixing those, because it drives me crazy.

The 4Runner has a super smooth drivetrain, but the Tacoma is definitely quicker, you just have to get it wound up a bit more. I wonder if Toyota intentionally made the Tacoma less refined to keep it feeling like a truck? I get the feeling that if the 3.5 makes its way to the 4Runner, it'll be smoother than what's in the Tacoma. Regardless, I'm comfortable in both. I could probably get by without the truck bed, but it would be a hassle sometimes. A part of me has wanted a Trail/TRD OR 4Runner for a long time, but I have loved my Tacomas too much to make the switch. Personal preference and needs are different for everybody, so to each their own. I think the one thing we can all agree on, is that we hope Toyota doesn't screw up the 4Runner and turn it into a crossover.

If they turn it into a crossover, those of us who bought it for its rugged off-roading capability will see it as effectively discontinued. But how big of a chunk of the market are we? It seems that for every built/wheeled 4R I see, there are 10 stock 4Rs driven by moms on the road.

I'm not sure Toyota is going to change much on the 4R anyway given the sales numbers for the 5th gen.

Talk BS all you want but its still BS. Like you said you're 5'7" you won't feel cramped in anything lol.

I'm 6'4" and I've owned TWO 4runners and THREE Tacomas, I guarantee I have more seat time in both and its complete bullshit to say the 4runner has more passenger room, it literally and measurably does not. It has a different seating position which is VERY different.

You can say the 4runner is more comfortable sure, thats an opinion and everyone has one I even agree with that. But its a straight lie to say you have more room in the 4runner I don't know why you guys are so bent on arguing that lol.

Its like me saying the tacoma is shorter than the 4runner... thats not an opinion its just a lie.

    Yeah.
I don't know the facts, but my opinion is that the 4Runner feels just slightly more cramped than my Tacoma. But the seat seems higher. That's also an opinion, haven't measured it.

Agreed. 3.5 is a good motor. Thinking back to the 3.4L 5VZ, what great progress on efficiency and power. Just .1L bigger, but sure feels much bigger.

I think I would have been ok with a 4Runner, but the Tacoma is much more versatile. Even if you're looking to haul cargo unexposed to elements, a simple shell does the trick. Then take it off for bulky stuff.

I tried doing the trailer and roof rack thing in the past. Never worked for me. Hated dragging that thing around. Or having all the gear up so high. So it fits my needs pretty well.

But it’s a car engine, your differential’s gonna blow up the first mile your warranty is done, your engine lacks a torque curve, and your rear brakes are prehistoric and don’t work!
