I tried to like the Tacoma, and man did I ever WANT to like it. . . but I just can't get past the shifting issues. If I thought the OV Mod was guaranteed to solve the issues, I would reconsider. Anyone here care to give me the Pros Cons of moving into a Tundra? My dealer let me drive it and keep it for two days. . . man is it a breath of fresh air after driving "the slug" for a month. They said if I want it, that they would work it out somehow. Guys, one last time - does the OV Mod truly make the Tacoma truck driveable? If so, I would just as soon keep the Taco, and buy the mod - I want to like this truck so bad.

UPDATE: I see I have caused a bit of a discussion on here - many things were mentioned - and some were even helpful . There are some people on here that get offended or annoyed if you even mention that the vehicle might be less than what they personally feel it is. I didn't mean for this to be personal, but apparently it was headed in that direction by a few people. If you like the vehicle, I am not saying you are wrong and quite honestly, I wish I could like it as much as some of the people say they do.
After test driving the Tundra for a day and literally watching the gas gauge go down after each acceleration, it was apparent that I couldnt afford the Tundra due to the gas cost alone. It was a nice drive and powerful truck. I really like the Tacoma except for the shifting, but I think I will stick with it in hopes that the OV tune will work for me. If not, I'll just put my foot through the floor board to accelerate and call it good. I test drove the Tundra, Highlander, and Forerunner as possible replacements. I know these are all different animals, but the dealership was only willing to trade me even up with another Toyota model on his lot - and they were willing to absorb the sales tax. At the end of the day, I learned that there were many features about the Tacoma that I really like in comparison to the others.

Get your Tundra. It sounds like even if they fixed the shifting you would find something else not to like.
Please make sure you test drive.

Since you don't like the Taco you might want to check out the Honda Ridgeline for a lot less than a Tundra.o_O

Tundra is an awesome piece of machinery. I loved mine so much, and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a full sized truck. I had 2 reasons for selling it. First, gas mileage. 12 mpg with a leveling spacer in the front and 33 inch tires. The second was because although I dont do crazy off roading, the stuff I do is tight, and the truck would scrape on everything

Per my original message, yes I'm test driving it right now. Contrary to your post though, I would really like the vehicle if the shifting were fixed. I'm also assuming from your post that you agree that the shifting is broken - QUOTE: "even if they fixed the shifting". I think there are alot of people on this site that are in denial about the Tacoma.

There is a software update that helps alleviate some of the issues people report with shifting. You have to complain about a very specific set of problems to get it. Do a search for TSB and look for the shifting one.

There's also a lot of people who test drove the vehicle a bunch before they bought the vehicle and knew what they were getting into. And also a lot that are perfectly ok with their vehicle.

Sorry that you're figuring out you're not fond of the Tacoma. Hope you find something you like and it doesn't get too expensive for you.

Yes, I tried the latest TSB - but by the the end of the day of running errands, it was back to the same way. Even the people in the service department know of these shifting issues - I like the Tundra as I am test driving it right now, but I realize it guzzles too much gas. I just might hang on to the Taco and trade it in at a later date.

Yes, I know. . .this is what I get for not taking the dealership's offer of test driving it for a few days. I blindly just assumed that with Toyota's name, that this would be a great vehicle. On the initial test drive, I told them that I thought the shifting was "Funky", but they assured me that it was a "learning transmission" and that all of that would go away. The Chevy Colorado has much more Pep and gets better gas mileage than the Tacomah. I was sold on the taco's great looks and Toyota's reputation . . .didnt do my research - a hard and expensive lesson learned.

What do you need a truck for?

Honestly if you don’t need a full size just get a used 2nd Gen.

If you need a full size I reccomend a Ford. Used. Let someone else drive a few grand off it.

I HATED my Tundra. It was like walking back in time technology wise. The interior felt cheap with a lot of hard plastic. Plus the gas mileage was horrendous.

And the Colorado air bags go off on dirt roads. Haha.

This is my 3rd Tacoma. I've towed with them all. I've offroaded with them as well. The 3rd gen is not the same as a 2nd gen. Or any other mid size truck right now really. Instead of forcing the truck do something, learn the truck. They run way higher RPM. I could have easily gone back to a second gen, but I can honestly say i really enjoy my truck.

I understand it's a person to person thing, but it's easy to find a bunch of people bitching on this site. Figured I'd offer up a contrasting perspective. Hope you find your truck whether it remains being the Tacoma or another one. Driving is something a person should always enjoy

All this bitching about shifting, it’s what they do. I could careless if shifts up, down, sideways. As long as I press the gas and it goes then it’s doing it’s job. Sell it, buy something else that will make ya happy.

Hold off for another month or so. OV is releasing the latest version in hopefully no more than 2 weeks. Let people install it and start posting their impressions before ruling it out. He’s saying that it’s going to be a totally different experience now that there’s so much more data for him to work with in the latest TSB.

Screw a Tundra and Toyota for not updating that thing. it's the least desirable 1/2 ton on the market.

even if you dislike domestic the 3 big companies are investing way more into their full size trucks and it shows.

I’m convinced that if 90% of the people complaining about how this truck shifts weren’t on the internet, they’d never believe there’s an issue to begin with.
