So I'm selling my 17 tacoma, and I've got it on Autotrader. It is listed well below blue book, as I was hoping for a quick sale. I've had nothing but out of state phone calls and the vast majority have been guys saying they will meet me at a Chase bank near me. Now I don't have a problem with that if it's a legitimate buyer, but every caller has the same story. No other information from them. A little bit of negotiation and then we either don't agree on a price, or we do and then they don't call back. I don't know what their angle would be. One guy stuck to a low price and after a couple of weeks I text him and said I would take $500 more than what he was offering. He still stuck to the original price. One week after that I agreed to his original offer and then he lowered it another $500. It made me laugh and I told him to lose my number. I think they have so many people and offers out there, they can't remember what they said to who.
Has anyone else had trouble on Autotrader, not just with the Tacoma but any car?

On Craigslist the scam is always to get a hold of my email, for what specific reasons I don't know. It's either to send a follow-on email scam, or perhaps to gather enough personally identifying information that they can then get into some identity theft.

On the converse end I've also seen Tacomas listed insanely low (like 50% low) and it's the same scam. Send me your email and I'll send you more info kind of thing. For example:

I get the Craigslist scammer every time I sell something. They offer you a little more to try and hook you. Get your email to send you the “money” via PayPal plus an extra say $2k for shipping. Then they give you another email to pay the “shipper” the 2k. If you pay the “shipper” you just got scammed out of 2k and they stop talking to you. I have my Harley on Craigslist right now and I’ve been messing with a couple this week just to waste their time.

If you do sell, meeting at your bank is a great idea- make the buyer come inside with you with the cash and accept it from them infront of the teller and deposit it on the spot. The teller will put it in their scanner right there to check for fake bills before accepting rhe deposit.

My transaction like this ended up with the seller getting nervous and trying to leave and getting arrested for passing fake 100’s and I didnt get my truck stolen.

Another scam is fake or stolen bank checks - tell the buyer you will only accept and deposit those right in front of a teller and watch them get nervous and try to weasle out of going into a bank. Its so bad I only accept cash inside my bank or a paypal payment anymore.

I just got off the phone with a guy who has been texting me like crazy. He says he will pay me what I want. So I said that's fine, but you drive to me and when your certified check clears that's when you can take the truck. So he said yes to all that and now hes saying his "coworker" will be meeting me at the bank. Too many red flags.

Sounds like a scam to me.

I get so tired of selling privately. I've done it 20+ times in my life time. Last time was the first time I traded in. The dealer gave me a great deal, though, so it made sense. With the tax savings on the new truck, I was about even WITHOUT dealing with tire kickers and low ballers. I'd at least give some dealers a shot. Maybe CarMax.

I’d call the cops and have them question this coworker. If they check out then all good. If not the scammer will bounce or hopefully be caught

The other trick for minor in person transactions is say you will meet them at the police station to do the deal. Half the time people just flake out. I don’t do meet ups anymore unless I’m real desperate to sell something or I know the buyer well.

I had a guy wanting my old Toy, waited for him half and hour. Emailed him thru CL, said his phone battery died. Sold the truck to a neighbor then.

When I sold my Toyota, I put it on CL with my phone. The person texted the whole time. He never talked to me on the phone even after I told him my phone number. I figured this deal would not happen but he actually came to see. I did not know how to react, I so wanted to text him "hello"!

NEVER EVER EVER (did I say never?) accept a certified check!!! My brother did and ended up having to prove in court that it was refused and why by his bank since he couldnt return it to the buyer. Fricking huge expense for him with missed work, lawyer consultation, and more time to get the bank to cough it up.

I did accept one once also and almost got weasled for it, along with another sale involving fake bills (see my previous comment).

I hate it when an EBay seller accepts my high “buy it now” price but wants me to sell to them off EBay and accept a Western Union payment. They email me a “Western Union” address to send the item to and say they will pay me directly from there. Sooo, I write back telling them that their Western Union office didnt work, but I sent my stuff to another Western Union they can go to pick it up and pay me from... so far, I’ve sent two people that contacted me from London the addresses to their local police stations to pick up their packages.

I know this dumbass kid who was a freshman in undergrad when I just graduated. Was an acquaintance of mine during high school.

Dude apparently received a check for $800. How, idk, I guess random check sent out to college dorm addresses or something or somehow someone got his info. Request in the letter was to cash it and then send the money back to this person lol. Dude cashed the check and sends the money and of course it bounced. I don’t recall if it was sent back via cash or some western union scam. Some people are too gullible which is why all this assanine scams work.

When I post on craigslist I use O's instead of zero's for my phone # in the ad so bots don't catch it & craigslist doesn't block it out. Also no emails. I don't get spammed at all & I sell a lot on there

I never put my phone number in the ad. I use the secure CL email acct to pre-screen inquiries and ask them for their phone number for me to call them, with my caller ID blocked the first time I call them (but I give them heads up about the incoming call by setting a call appt with them via the CL email too).
