Performance feels restricted (problem 3 of 3 - 2018, 300 miles)

I bought my 2018 Tacoma TRD Off-Road about one month ago. I previously owned a 2003 Tacoma TRD Off-Road. I was expecting to have my mind blown with the new truck. This did not happen. At first I told myself the lack of performance was probably just EPA restrictions associated with new vehicles. Then I took my truck into the dealership with the idea of addressing the other issues (clicking from wheel well, dash vibrations/noise), and test drove two other Tacomas. The other two felt great. I can't really pinpoint the difference, it just feels like something is holding my truck back, like 10% comparatively - not mind blowing or anything. It feels like once you take your foot off the accelerator it just wants to start slowing down instead of coasting. I almost feel like there is an issue with the computer, brake assist, transmission, or fuel injection. Any ideas? Anyone else feeling this? I'm starting to think I just got a lemon. Lesson learned, don't just buy one - test drive the other ones as well!!

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Scott

For starters- Try driving in S5 or S6 and see if the "engine braking" feeling goes away. I think the manual mentions something about reduced engine braking when using S modes.

Better "coasting" was the first thing I noticed the first time I tried an S mode in town.

Thanks for the tip regarding S mode. I'll give it a try.

Regarding saving judgement for 5K, I am hoping by 5K I will have these issues addressed. Of course the truck is under warranty, they just have to hear/see/feel the issue before they will fix - which is fair enough. With that said, spending a ton of cash on something that isn't working properly two weeks in pretty damn frustrating, and not the outcome I had anticipated.

My truck felt like $hit when I drove it with 2 miles on the odometer. Very hesitant and unrefined.
now at 10,000 miles and with the new ecu update, it feels great. Mine started feeling better by around 5000 miles.

Which is why I told the OP what I did.
You cannot judge anything in 300 miles. Drive it. Hard. It will be fine.

If you're in a more metro like area, stop and go, turn off the brake assist sensor in the grill. It will apply extra brake force everytime you push the pedal. But yeah the truck feels like the e brake is on always. Just how it feels

    D-ring tie-downs.
I drive domestics on and off road for work. Brands will remain nameless. unnecessary. Throttle mapping, braking, shift algorithm, steering, ride/handling, interior design, etc., etc., etc. are pathetically terrible compared to my Tacoma or my one son's Tundra. Signing too quick and buyers remorse eliminated, go back to the dealer and complain.

Press the ECT Button and drive around. Also remember that with a new engine there is a break-in period. Can you get video of the rattling that you're talking about? Check your cabin air filter in the glove box and make sure the plastic shelf is situated properly.

This is common it seems for a lot of people moving on to the 3rd gen from previous gens. It's a different engine with a different transmission with a lot of other updates as well. Gotta do some research with a bit of hands on before making a large purchase like this.

I can tell you the drive isn't like my 09. From reading here before I bought, I knew the drive wasn't like anything else.
I'm okay with it. It's drives very similar to the vehicle I used to drive that had a C7/MD3060 combo.

Give it a little more time, new vehicles tend to drive differently than old vehicles.
There could be an issue that the dealer needs to address. Discuss it with the dealer in that case.
Mine was built on June 26(ordered/reallocation) and delivered July 9. So any relevant TSB from before the build date should have been factory installed.
I don't know if Toyota dealers are supposed to do TSB updates for their stock vehicles before delivery.
Do you have the build date?
