My 2018 DC with less than 100 miles on the ODO flashed a CEL for P0420. Jump forward to today and after "consulting with the engineers" Toyota is ordering new catalytic converters to be swapped out. They are supposedly on "back order" and will take a week to get.

    So...

I'm wondering if there is anything to keep an eye on with a brand new truck needing cats replaced? O2? Worth replacing the CPS on my own afterwards? What's the likelihood of bad cats vs. something else causing the cats to "not perform at their optimal level"? Also, anyone know if a week backorder is usual or does it imply that the part is in such demand that they can't keep them in stock (i.e. wider spread problem)?

On a positive, I've been in a 4-Runner loaner while the Taco is in the shop and must say, the 4-Runners are pretty fun!

When my blower motor went out, it was on national back order. It took 5 weeks before I got a new one. A few days after I got my new one installed Toyota issued a recall...or safety bulletin? Idk, I don't remember what they called it. But it appeared it was on back order because they had recalled all the stock of the previous blower motor then rebuilt up the stock off the new blower motor with the corrected specifications.

No idea about your cats though, first time hearing of the issue

After 100 miles from new I can’t think of anything that would make the cats go bad. Not even dumping raw fuel into them would make them go bad after 100 miles.

This is assuming the diagnosis is accurate and it is the cat. Let them replace and don’t worry unless the light comes on again.

With a bad cat CEL, my recollection is that the mixer goes toward the rich side. Someone should confirm that. It might be good to just park it or ask for a loaner to not carbon up the motor?

As a former mechanic a week back order is normal. They usually do not keep the part in stock and will have to order it from the warehouse. It’s the equivalent of having a rip in your steering wheel, they are not going to replace the steering wheel with the huge supply of 2017 Tacoma steering wheels they have on the shelf in the back, so they order it from the warehouse. No big deal, at least you got a sweet 4-runner.

It’s a mass produced product. Some will have glitches. Doesn’t sound like anything to be concerned about. They’ll get it sorted and you’ll be back in your truck in no time.

Can not find the thread but some one had pictures of pin holes in the welds of their cat. Maybe related.

Well, just picked up my truck and NO CEL!!! Apparently there was a "...small crack in honeycomb part of converter" which was replaced along with the exhaust manifold assembly. Have about 30 miles on it now and no CEL (it would previously come on in 2-3 miles after being cleared)...so...fingers crossed that I can finally enjoy my new 4x4!
