Fan speed switch not working.

So I I’ve tthe last week I’ve had the issue where it only works on high, replaced the resistor worked for a couple days then it happened again. Looked at the plug and the 3rd spot is kinda brown but not as bad as others I’ve seen. My dad who’s a mechanic seems to think it’s the blower motor. How would one tell?

 

If it works on high, but not on the other speeds, it's the resistor and resistor connector. Replacing only the resistor is like having a grilled ribeye and no baked potato. Like spending $100 on a romantic dinner and only getting a goodnight kiss. Like buying 2 new tires when all 4 are bald.

 

Bang the bottom of the blower motor with ur hand or tap with a rubber mallet a few times If the blower motor starts to work, then replace the blower motor if not then it could be bad wire connections.

 

Seconded. In my 2013 the plug had no burn marks but the resistor did, as @brianscha4 has pictured. I replaced my resistor with this $24 one from Amazon (

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00G6FDT7E). This is not a ten minute job thanks to the location. OP's 10 minute expectation turned into an hour twisting and turning trying to remove and replace the two screws and keep the back screw from falling behind the carpet. Also, I used a 7/32" socket.

You can see the burn marks on both sides of the resistor.

 

I had the same problem where AC would only work on High. I came out to my truck and removed the plug from the resistor and cleaned it off and then plugged it back in. Everything works now lol. At least I’ll know what to do if it craps out again.

I've been wiggling my plug periodically but now it needs a real fix.

 

My 2009 has had this problem for a couple of years. Now it never works at all except on hi speed. Going to tackle it this weekend.

 

got the fan working again. The resistors checked ok. So I just sprayed contact cleaner in the socket contacts and plugged it back in. I'm sure it's a temporary fix. Dream/goal is to get rid of the resistor pack and 4 fan speeds and replace with a variable speed fan controller.

There’s a lot of info on AC only working on the high setting, but are there any experiences with AC working on all settings EXCEPT hi?

I assume this condition eliminates the resistor being the culprit, so what are other checks? I have a 2015.

Look at all the connectors for the switch and down on the resistor and motor.

 

Well...my switch has a burned pin, so I’ll be researching replacement. Thanks for the input.

 

So here is my delimma. I went and purchased the "updated" resistor from Toyota. It came with a service wiring repair kit (connector) because of the connector issues I'm sure. Now I have no idea how to wire it back. The colors are wonky and if you look at the end of the new connector it is labeled 1,2,3,4 not A,B,C,D like the old one. I spent 55 minutes on hold with the dealership and they have no idea either. I am awaiting a response from their tech's tech...

 

That's the wrong connector. That won't even plug onto the resistor.

 

its the correct connector for the new "updated" resistor - I verified this with the VIN with Toyota

 

I call BS on that. What's the part number on the resistor they sold you?

I don't know what the deal is with that part number. There are 80 posts on TW with the part number that is listed in the Toyota TSB 87138-04052.

The only post with that part number you referenced is your post. However, if you google search your number, it shows up as fitting Tacoma.

Lots and lots of Tacos have been repaired with resistor 87138-04052 and pigtail

$32 82141-04M40

82141-04M40. They fit together and they work.

What's also weird is that if you google the part number on that pigtail in your pic, it retails for over $2,000

 

So I read all of those threads, and I know what your saying is true...however; that was not my question or what I needed help with.
I finally got a wire diagram from Toyota. Turns out they are installing the 2018 version now because of all of the problems with the earlier version. If anyone needs the diagram and not a reiteration of the other parts numbers, let me know.
