Install wiring to connect to small trailer

Briefly speaking, how does one go about installing the wiring under the truck, in my case a 2002 Taco2.4l, to connect with the wires on trailer?Is this a tough job or straight forward?

 

It’s been a few years since I installed trailer wiring in my 2000 Tacoma but I believe the best way is buy a plug in wiring harness for your type and year truck. Then remove one taillight and just disconnect stock wiring plugs and plug into wiring kit. On a 4 connector flat plug for a utility trailer that’s basically it. If your going for a camper trailer then you do need to run a heavy wire under the chassis, from the battery back to the harness.

My truck came with the tow package, but the OEM part that does this function was broken. No right turn or brake light. It was $300 from Toyota and about $100 on eBay. I picked up one of those Hopkins kits and installed it in under an hour. The kit plugs into the wire harness at the rear signals. Most of the time was zip tying the wires under the truck. Works great.

I needed about 10 zip ties and a bolt for the ground. I had an unused bracket for the ground and just needed a 6mm bolt and washer. I used some sand paper to get the paint off so the ground would make a good connection. I uses a little grease to help keep rust away and the connection good.
