I was in the taco vs 4runner dilemma for months, almost 2 years. The biggest deciding factor was the manual transmission not offered in the 4runner. I owned a 3rd gen 5 speed and it was just great.

The Tacoma is a awesome truck with some quirks, even if its got a slightly longer wheelbase i've seen much larger trucks do the same trails... Not with ease, but manageable. If the Taco wasn't available in 6 speed manual I would not have bought it, the auto is such a hog.

The 4runner is a great candidate, but really reminds me of the perfect hip soccer mom suv.

Jumped ship to a 4Runner and I know a ton of people who have this past year.

Had a 2011 TxPro Tacoma and went to a 2018 ORP Runner.

The day I was going to buy...
Had a white 2018 TRD OR Prem Tacoma lined up to buy but test drove the 4runner the last minute, extended test drove it and bought. Fits my needs kayaks go on the roof, Hunting and Fishing gear in the back, takes trails like a champ. Glad I made the switch maybe a truck in the future but for now it's more than what I need.

Congrats on the 4runner you'll love it.
