another vote for Gaia, really easy to create routes and a lot of maps to choose from depending on what information you want.

These. GAIA PRO. Great for sharing routes or showing someone where you are, plus editing route and downloading .gpx files to garmin if you want.20171105_171028.jpg on my Tab

The #1 reason I use Gaia is in New England where land is hundreds of years old, you need about 10 maps to navigate through 20 miles of trails. Turning around on a trail is not an option most of the time. As in it's a 100'+ drop. With Gaia I have routes with backup routes and layers with downloaded tiles on each map with screen shot satellite images of key visual landpoints.

I tried Backcountry and hated it. Few others too. I run Gaia and APRSfi at the same time no issueScreenshot_20181002-004758.jpg

Logbook, odometer trip reset, and heading on compass. You've got the right idea

+1 for Gaia. I got a Bad Elf external gps for my iPad as it doesn't have gps built in. Then im using the hondo garage mount for the tablet. The combo works extremely well off road.

I have the Tab E 8. They run a Snapdragon 410 that has Gps, Glonass. It's slow and cheap but works fine for running my offroad apps.

Bad Elf paired to either my phone, tablet or both.

For mapping I've been using maps.me
Not familiar with GAIA but I know @riz_atx uses it with great success.

I really like an Android App - Backcountry Navigator. Lots of different background layers to choose from & download for offline usage (topos, imagery, etc)....plus if you're GIS savvy, you can easily import whatever background raster you want and load it into the the app, for easy offline access. Super easy to import gpx files too. $10 for the premium version. No need to buy some gps, as the android phone's internal GPS these days is very powerful.

Gaia pro with a Samsung galaxy tablet. Uses the ram mount that attaches to the pax seat bolt. Solid as a rock!

This was a post install pic. Don't drink and drive!

    I havent forgotten about you ( OK, I did.. but I remembered again! )

Let me see if I have some old "tracks" in my GPS I can use for a demo. but here's the short of the long.

turn on GPS / aquire satelite link and toss GPS on the dash.
    have fun / go wheelin
download data via "easyGPS" to the PC.
open up "my maps" in google maps
    import "tracks" into new map
    enjoy / save.

Let me see what I can do about screen shots and better descriptions. it really is pretty easy. hard part is getting it off the GPS, and that's not all that hard.

I just took my old Garmin out of the closet (from the pre-built-in GPS days) and loaded the data from California Trail Map (http://www.californiatrailmap.com) onto it.

I have an IPAD with both GAIA and avenza. Don't have cellular so I bought a Garmin Glo which is both GLONASS and WASS enabled. IT was like 90 bucks and bluetooths to the tablet. Did not need anything special, as soon as the tablet connects to GPS it plots position on the map. I still have my old GARMIN vehicle GPS as well which I can also turn tracks on if needed. I made some topomaps for it that I downloaded at GPS filedepot so have most trails and good resolution topos for pretty much anywhere I drive.
