Well, I lost this years Hurricane roulette. I am supposed to be in Hatteras starting Saturday. I’d say the chances of that are less than zero. Oh well, it’s only a vacation. I’ll get my money back and go down in October. Feel bad for the residents and business owners, this is going to be a bad one.

For better or worse I was given one if those a few weeks ago. I was running 18 and then had to drop down to 15. World of difference.

Pea Island is already washing over in spots, the bridge is closed south to tourists, mandatory evac starts at noon for non residents and 7am for everyone. the food lion in avon closed their doors cause there is over wash right there as well.

Anyone down there right now that's not from here I would STRONGLY advise getting out, come tonight South 12 may not be passable even with some of the rigs I've seen on here. Its not going to be pretty and access to Hatteras Island might be closed for weeks or even months after this storm, I've lived here 28yrs and have never seen over wash this early before the storm.

We just spent a week out at Corova and lucked out with six straight days of sunshine. Good times had by all. My truck is the 2015 and the 2017 is my buddy's.

If you're renting a house be careful. They might prorate the refund. The rental company I used said they only refund for the days that are a mandatory evacuation so if it starts Monday and ends Friday, you'll only get refunded for Monday through Friday

I’m aware of that, thanks. That is the policy of all the realtors down there. I’m guessing the evac will last at least one week, probably more depending on how much damage is done to Rt. 12. They will allow the residents back in first and then visitors. I just hope I can reschedule something later in the fall. The fishing is better in October anyway.

Can't get the hand of the multi quote thing still.. oh well.. My girlfriend worked for a rental company in Avon for 2.5yrs and always tried to push travel insurance on people. It's a certain percentage ( not exceeding 7% in NC) of what you pay for the house/cottage/whatever but will cover you so you don't lose out on a lot of money. IF you're here and a mandatory evac is ordered, you'll be prorated for the days you missed. If an evac is already ordered when you're supposed to come then you're refunded the total amount minus the travel insurance premium. This varies per the travel insurance company that the rental company uses of course. What I explained above is the specific policy for Travel Guard Insurance company.

    Are you leaving?
Our family has been going for years starting in the mid 80’s. My has it changed!
My sister and brother in law went down once without the rest of the family. A tropical storm came through and they decided to ride it out. She said never again, scared the crap out of her.

I've never left, tropical storms generally aren't that bad. Nor'easters usually pack more of a punch. The strongest hurricane I've been through was a strong cat 2/weak cat 3.. the most devastating I've personally been through was Irene when I had 6' of water in my yard and 9"-12" inside my house, the house has been raised since. I'm not terribly scared of this one because of where I'm located on the beach, however, if I lived south of Bodie Island, I'd more than likely leave. The tracks for now are shifting north, but that could change on the next update.

Picking up a roof top tent Saturday and was wondering how many people camp at the outer banks? What are some of your favorite camp grounds? I’ve never been camping down at the beach but planning to come down 4-5 times (I hope more) this year and do a bunch of fishing. Any info would be great!

I have done a bit of camping in the OBX.

Cape Fear State Park: Backpacking Camping
Cape Lookout National Seashore: Car Camping + probably the only place in the OBX where you can car camp on the beach.
Cape Hatteras National Seashore: 4 car camping spots inland.

There are some private campsites scattered around the OBX ranging from tent accommodations to RV accommodations. I couldn't tell you if any have beachfront camping because I tend to stick to the federal/state parks.
