Yup, in Europe. Drove a manual for a month in Greenland. Talk about no throttle response...and the low end was truly junk. Had to rev it to even get out of its own way. Then, it sounds like crap when you did get up to 4K rpm's. I will say we tore the shit out of that truck though, and it never once cried for mercy. 4X4 trails etc...treating it like a rental.

I was not a fan, and was happy to be back in my truck...automatic or not!

Would you buy one if Toyota offered it with say a $4,500 upcharge from what your truck cost new? I know I sure would not.

Fanboy. And I’ll downplay it all day, it’s a dumb idea, just like twin turbos on the v6 gasser. People keep trying to turn the Tacoma into something it isn’t- a raceCAR. A racetruck. A heavy duty freight hauler. Never minding that it’s a small utility truck. The diesel idea specifically is tarded. The Tacoma and hilux are not the same thing. And a US version of a Diesel engine in a Tacoma these days would be plague ridden, just like all the other diesel options. If it was egr only, sure. Or if it was simply a matter of the one extra step of filling DEF, sure. But it’s not that simple. Now you have a myriad of components that are failure prone, I’ll list off all the problems I’ve personally come across. False DEF contamination causing derate. DEF leaks, which cause cascading faults due to the volatility of DEF when it even so much as touches a connector with current that runs through it, if it creeps in, which it does. Sensors and heaters responsible for keeping DEF from freezing. 7th injectors constantly clogging. As far as I can tell, nobody has found a way to keep DEF from crystallizing in the aftertreatment system, causing an almost infinite amount of problems. The average Joe being able to run regens or crystal sublimation procedures, if there are any. Plus the cost of turbos, Fouled DPF, DEF delivery, nox sensors, temp sensors, dude the list goes on and on. For what? Fuckin nothing.

Yes...the highly regarded Hilux. It wasn't a new one by any means, reminded me of my old Gen1 Tacoma but with a diesel.

No but there is a Hilux (Tacoma) turbo diesel option available in most of the world.

Fair enough, opinions are welcomed. My comment was meant to say that tankers outweigh (engine count) cruise ships by orders of magnitude. Pushing cruise ships to be more efficient is drops in the bucket to what you could get by working on the other target.... tankers.

Govt will almost always go for the easy win..... luxury taxes.

Another thought... rather than trying to squeak out another 10% reduction in auto polution in modern world,(and it’s already pretty low compared to past) why not go after China, India, Malaysia, Africa, and all the other countries that have essentially no polution laws. I think some of those countries even allow cat-less vehicles. Put some money towards that.

It’s definitely a multi faceted problem, and I certainly don’t have the answers. Nor the desire to expend the mental effort at this point in my life.

I'd estimate negative .3 IQ points, and no money.

Luckily I got in before they start charging.

Either way Toyota isn't offering a diesel thirdgen.

By the time diesel spec’ed for the US is up to Toyota standards, the Tacoma will be electric.

I’m not completely in love with my 3rd gen Tacoma, but I new it going in. I have a manual because that’s what I like and it is the only little truck I could get with a manual. Sure I would love a diesel, there cool. But for a $4000 up charge I will put that money in the glovebox. Anytime I need to buy gasoline I reach over and get my ,”free gasoline “ coupons. In the Tacoma it is going to take a long time to see the cost upside.
