Oil Catch Cans- anyone running them and their experiences...??

Yup.

I know for a fact that on certian seadoo supercharged inline 3 motors that those who ran a crank case breather to open air or ran a catch can had issues with valves BREAKING due to rust build up in the extremely moist environments.

Also, as far as moisture that is all burnt off via combustion, its not like you ever find pools of water in the intake unless you went swimming with your truck, then you have bigger issues.

 

Again, take a look at what some folks drain out of their catch cans. If it were just an oil mist and nothing more, I would see no harm in reintroducing this into the motor via the PCV system. However, it's not just an oil mist. It's at times seriously contaminated with water and other by-products of combustion. Some pretty nasty stuff can come out of the catch cans.

Marine environments demand particular "systems" that I'm not at all familiar with....I'm guessing that marine motors and auto/truck motors in some respects, are apples and oranges....

 

correct definitely apples to oranges, but it does prove that a stock setup crank breather setup provides some top end lubrication.

I getcha on not wanting to cycle the "nasties" through the intake tract

 

As I'm seeing it, the question to ask is"Does the use of a catch can still allow oil in vapor/mist form to pass through it and back into the intake system to allow for upper cylinder lubrication?"

I'm not an expert by any means.... but I would answer yes. The oil catch system is not 100%..... so some of it does get past and back into the engine. I'm just trying to remove as much as possible.

 

Please direct us to a specific source for that info.

 

I disagree with you. I don't care for his delivery but I usually agree with most of what he says. I'm not a mechanic but I have been doing most of my own mechanic work for a lot of years. I think his content is decent.

I'd like to hear from someone that has used a catch can on a V6 Taco for over 100,000 miles.

Simple proof positive that it doesn't cause issues...and is actually beneficial.

A stock Taco has traditionaly proven to last 300 to 400,000 miles,......so why the catch can???

And the crickets sing.....

Mine has been on my 2013 for 80,000 miles. No issues so far.

 

I have a 2013 and I have had a oil catch can installed since it had 1000 miles on it I now have 111,000+. I have kept track of the amount of shit I have drained and it’s a little over 3 gallons worth of nastiness. Nobody in there right mind would be ok wiling allow this burnt oil water mix going through their intake manifold. Yes run a catch can

The probability of the crap going through the EGR system and then being evenly disributed to all six cylinders is not happening. It is probably only going through 2 maybe 3 cylinders at the most. That stuff is nasty I do not want it in my engine.

I’m using a universal Moroso kit. Super high quality, with a quick drain valve. I haven’t run a drain line, but I can easily get a plastic water bottle under it to drain.

The catch cans that have the clear tube for a sight/level indicator on the side provide another area for leaks and are prone to cracking of the tube in freezing weather. The one the OP posted has a dipstick so you can monitor the gunk. Mine is never half full when I clean it out at each engine oil change. A little teflon tape on the catch can dipstick will keep it tight and prevent a vaccum leak. The hose that comes with the catch can is crap. I used fuel hose on both my catch cans.
