I agree with most of this except the sprint booster part. It isn't even close to the same as the ect button.

I feel like that just raises the rev count for the shift points. If it does change throttle respsonse it must be very minor.

I know, right? Not to mention the fact that so many of the same people who pay $40k for the truck immediately drop money on lifts, suspension, big tires, racks, RTTs etc - $700 isn’t chump change but if it dramatically improves my $35k purchase so I no longer regret buying it it was the best damn money I’ve spent in a long time!

Exactly. That's why I bought it. For a daily driver I think the tune is the biggest bang for the buck since it's something you'd notice just about every moment you are driving the truck. You can't say that aboit a lift and tires. :)

I'm glad I found this thread and forum! I just bought my 2017 Taco last Tuesday and I am ready to trade it in already due to the poor engine performance and shift happy transmission. I'll wait until the OV Tunes are back in stock and get that system to see if it makes a difference. Coming from my GX470 engine, I'm a bit disappointed by the performance of the V6. Apples and Oranges I know.

I would prefer a tune, but the PC is a good bandaid for now. Definitey makes the truck easier to drive - you don't have to keep mashing in and out of the gas just to keep up speed, which I found extremely annoying stock...

My thoughts are: buy the OVTune and get it over with. If you are unhappy with the way this truck drives, this is the best solution you are ever going to find, short of buying a different vehicle. I just recently purchased after reading through every page of the alpha tune thread over the last few months, and I am extremely pleased with the difference (I've only tried the 87 octane tune so far). The best way to describe it is that the truck just feels normal now. I'm not constantly thinking about how much throttle I have to give it to get it to hold a specific gear/keep a specific speed/downshift/upshift/etc.

I share the opinion of others in that if you can afford a truck that costs ~$30k, under normal circumstances you should be able to afford this tune. If you could have paid $31k to have a truck that drives like a normal truck, would you have done it? I know I sure would have. That's why after reading a ridiculous amount of reviews on this tune and seeing very, very few unhappy customers, I decided to just pull the trigger and get to enjoying this vehicle as soon as possible.

Whatever you decide, I hope you find what works best for you.

Seems like the OV and SSP would pair well since the truck doesn’t learn in S-mode. Anyone running these two together?

FWIW: I am RETIRED and DO live 'paycheck to paycheck'.......not everyone is 'rich'. I have 2 kids in college - didn't get married until mid- 30's. Being retired, my monthly 'take home' check gets smaller annually!!!! Currently, I get a COLA raise of ~ $85/month, BUT my healthcare is increasing by over $250/month. This has happened for each of the 4 years I have been retired. That is a NET DECREASE of over $160/month. I am taking home considerably less monthly than when I actually retired. Then throw in all the other increases - local taxes, insurance increases (auto, home etc), monthly household costs, helping the kids with their expenses etc.

So, yeah, $700 is a bit much for now. I have to work part time just to make ends meet - I know, poor me!!!

I bought my used Tacoma as my '07 Tundra was starting to 'nickle and dime me to death monthly'.

Also, my retirement system is trying to eliminate the COLA, or as a minimum decrease it and allow health care to keep rising.

FYI, OVTune is already working on completely stopping the shift learning in a future update.

    How does that work?
You uninstall your ECU and ship it? I’m in Houston.....
I don’t know anything about uninstalling a ECU.....any cons about doing that? Difficulty etc ?
    Thanks

If you are able to come out of pocket, I would recommend the OV Tune for best driveability and performance if that is what you are looking for.

Unlike the other products, the OV Tune actually provides a solution for the inadequate Toyota tune by making software changes.

In my opinion, I believe the product is priced correctly for what it offers. Receiving further updates is also something I have not seen from other companies.

If you think $700 is expensive for a tune, take a look at other vehicles and companies.

My needs might not be parallel with yours. I wanted the best driveability and performance out of this truck and I found it in the OV Tune. Perhaps the ShiftSense or SprintBooster might meet your needs.

Is it possible to sell the OVT kit (and more to the point: transfer the software license) after buying it? Asking because I'm currently leasing my '16, and if I can get the gas pedal vibrations and poor performance sorted out, then I could see myself buying out the truck instead of returning it. If the OVT doesn't help with the vibrating pedal issue, then I'll likely return the truck to toyota, and I'd like to be able to recoup some of the OVT costs.

If you think you need a tune move your seat closer to the pedals and use more go pedal. Thats all you need. My 18 3rd gen would blow the doors off my 2nd gen. Don't be afraid of it. Jump on it. Put your foot on the firewall once in a while and you'll forget about needing more response and power. GTS Bruce

You can sell the kit itself to someone else, but you'll only get about 1/2 what you paid back out of the kit b/c the new owner will still have to buy their own license before flashing their truck.

My 2018 has impressed the hell out of me with power and is pretty quick. You would think after the previous years they would fix the lag in the throttle. Glad I found this post, I know my next purchase will be the OV Tune.
