Yesterday I picked up my new tire and wheel package at the Tire Rack location in Roseville Minnesota. I was horrified when I removed the cardboard covers. One of the wheels had 16 1-ounce weights and another 16 1/4-ounce weights. Yes, that adds up to 32 wheel weights weighing 20 ounces, on a single wheel. One and one quarter pounds of weight attached to one rim.

Tire Rack itself posted an article on its blog recognizing a one percent rule — no wheel should have wheel weights exceeding one percent of the total weight of the tire and wheel. The combined weight of my chosen tire (BF Goodrich K/O2 265/70-17) and wheel (American Racing AR172 Baja) is 70 pounds. One percent of 70 pounds is 11.2 ounces.

Yes folks, Tire Rack prepared a tire and wheel using almost double the maximum allowable weight, by its own published standards. I can’t tell you how frustrated and disappointed I am.

I called the main customer service line. Ally was awesome and called the Roseville location lettingbthem know that I would be in later that day. Then a younger woman name Tyra helped me at the distribution center. She laughed that so many weights were used. She came back ten minutes later with a total of six weights. I just got a bad mounter/balancer. It happens.
