AluMax Tall Long Bed Rack Install On A Short Bed Diamondback Cover

When I bought my 2018 in Feb I ordered a Diamondback SE cover as I was signing the papers and I love this thing. Keeps my work equipment clean and dry and this light version can still hold about 500lbs. I started with KB Voodoo’s high bars (which are for sale) and recently just purchased @kbvoodoo AluMax tall long bed rack for my DCSB truck.

I wanted a system that worked with my cover, gave me a ton of strength and mounting options, plus my roof top tent. As this truck is my DD I needed it to come off and on easily and with the tonneau brackets it’s just 4 bolts. Plus I also purchased the cargo tray which is awesome! Here’s how it looks now from the front
    5CD6A56A-8CF1-45EF-99FE-18008C2AA1FB.jpg

In order to do all this I had to relocate the front lock 1.5 inches backwards to make room for the cargo tray crossbar. I sealed with two 1.5 inch washers. I moved the tie downs as well.

Locking arms are easy to adjust
    B7E5B6E3-CB06-4F0A-B872-C31F4C24A3DF.jpg

The DD profile is minimal leaving the tonneau brackets in place. I also have fork mounts and D rings on my cover for my mountian bikes
    2DDD86EC-52C4-4310-A98F-84E6E5916A6E.jpg
The rack is light! 55 pounds and the cargo tray is 49 pounds
    F88B999A-FEF4-4B76-9D42-AAB3C52C70C5.jpg

I looked at all these hoist and pulley options and realized the easiest solution was 4 binding style tie downs. $30 for the straps and eye bolts. They each can hold 300lbs and the rack is 104lbs and once I put my tent on then it will hoist the rack and tent together. It’s easy to lower down and 4 bolts later I’m ready to roll.
    5108CBBD-B965-4CD1-93B2-833C8D04D4DE.jpg

I opted for the KB Voodoo bike mounts which are solid!
    E30FB802-AE4E-4C44-AF0F-5D54D8F6C872.jpg
I regret not getting KB Voodoo’s Hi-Lift mount, I struggled with this one but love having it on the inside and yet accessible. Nice to have though I hope not to use it.

I also added 2 extra side boards to double them up for looks and mounting options. Each side has a 3 gallon Rotopax and I did not want the Rotopax lock for a couple reasons. I don’t need another key in my life, they are almost twice as much as a standard mount, and they can rust up. So I got a 3 pack of combo gun locks. Easy and the perfect length to keep my gear safe. Obviously no lock is 100% safe.

I bought 2 small Plano Sportmans Trunks and they fit EXACTLY PERFECT in the tray, seriously like they were meant to go there. I’m doing 2 as the center would be hard to fit, plus gives me room for my water jugs. Cargo net for smaller items. Such a great use of space.

I added crossbars under the main supports for my style of roof top tent.

Overall the powder coating seems more durable than my previous high rise bars.

Not directly related to the rack and cover, but I upgraded my off-road kitchen. The response has been strong so I’m thinking about doing it as a side hustle now. Minute 3:30 the kitchen comes out, for reference I have an iKamper now and I made a low profile slide to get my Dometic 75DZ under the cover next to the kitchen

I LOVE MY RACK STILL!! I added full extension 56” locking sliders and added to the rear portion of the tray for more cargo space. I get asked A LOT about how I mounted my iKamper to the rack. My rack and tent stay together as a package so I drilled through my cross members and used a single bolt at each corner through the track hardware they provide. Each bolt has a nylon lock nut and they have never come loose, it’s been super solid. You’ll see I added a black square tube under the tent as a spacer to lift the tent a little so the tent clears my shark fin better when hauling through Baja! :D

Nice job! I was looking for a solution to the tent crossbar issue with the long bed rack. Currently I have my tent opening backwards over the tailgate so it could be mounted to the rack, but I see you added some crossbars underneath. What did you use for the crossbars?

I bought and cut some 1” steel bars, drilled and bolted them to each other, then drilled and bolted them to the main support. I opted to mount my homemade crossbars under to reduce the height of the RTT. I currently have a soft top RTT but next month hoping to move to a hardshell like an iKamper. More aerodynamic and ease of set up.

The steel bars work and much cheaper and more customizable than a Thule bar or something similar.

FYI when building the cargo tray the bolt direction is very important. I had 2 bolts reversed and it was limiting the cargo tray extension. I reverse their direction so the slides would clear and it pulls out 32” which is really nice to access the gear.

Just did a rig walk around with Michael from Overland Bound today on a DD that converts to an overland rig. Gave some in-depth props to @kbvoodoo for his rack and cargo tray which Michael geeked out on. I hope it helps with sales for a great product. Your AluMax is a next level rack my friend.

The video will post Sunday night on Overland Bound’s YouTube channel A8D3508A-48A9-4721-9696-94352D451013.jpg
