Thank you everyone for the helpful information. I decided to go with a Magellan GPS and a RAM mount which uses suction cups. I am currently rigging up a velcro (I have metres of the stuff) mount to keep the unit secured during winter (-40 to -50 sometimes) and when off-camber. I will post pictures when I have it set-up in its permanent position on the dash below the mirror, which seems to be the best spot for visibility.
Thanks to everyone for the very helpful information.

That was a uninformed response- he gave a valid suggestion. I preload google hybrid satellite maps to the no-cellphone covered offroad areas I go to on my phone also, it provides trail maps where there’s usually just green blobs shown on most gps units. :boink:

But if you read reviews on many suggest only having it as a back up to a proper navigation tool because even when you buy the higher end one with the full topo maps it's a shit GPS.

The difference is where he is even offline maps suck as the GPS in your phone isn't all that powerful and you have a hard time being located.

I'm in Ontario as op is. And there's parts (especially if he's in the really remote areas) where it doesn't matter your phone's GPS will not find you.

I've tried doing exactly what you said for sone of the trails here and with the tree and rock coverage phones gps can't find always.

For trails its great - but not very good for drivers, my wife and I, or daughter usually read it for the driver. If you want voice directions, youre out of luck.

I've been trying to decide to just get the se or full Explorer and most of the reviews I'm reading/watching saying the navigation whether it's hiking or what have you aren't that great. That a dedicated GPS only would work better.

Ah, sounds like you have the best suggestion for your area. Sorry about saying that before. I ended up getting a Garmin Glo bluetooth GPS sender for my non-GPS iPad and phone, and use TopoMaps app, it works great and doesnt need a subscription like others. https://www.amazon.com/Garmin-Portable-GLONASS-Receiver-Vehicle/dp/B00AYAZENY
Not sure if that app will work in Canada though, as it downloads maps directly from USGS. Take care up there! :)

Wonder if that could be used as a booster.

You can put it on your dash or even your roof (in a bag or small case as its not waterproof), then yes, it will work that way. I just keep it on my dash and it works well enough that way. It doesnt use cellphone service at all- just receives positions directly from satellites and sends the signal via bluetooth to your iphone, ipad or android device.

Just an FYI, I work sometimes in Pikangikum, Sachigo Lake, Webique, Bearskin Lake and even in Fort Severn once where I saw a few polar bears (which was cool but made me a little nervous). The ice roads usually do not show up on Google Earth or Google Maps but paper and GIS maps are available from the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources (They are known as winter resource roads I think).
Thanks for all the suggestions, I tend to get good ideas here.
