I'm in the market for a quality tonneau cover for my 2017 DCSB tacoma. Does such a cover exist that keeps water out decently (I do realize that all covers will leak a little bit), not take up any extra space inside the bed, and not block the rear window when the cover is fully opened? I've looked at some of the retractable covers and like the fact that they aren't going to block the rear window while your driving if you're hauling something big and have the cover retracted but hate the fact that the canisters to house them take up a good 6-8" of bed space. Also I would like something that leaves the bed rail system somewhat usable after installation. Post up what you've got and pics would be appreciated if you've got some! :)

I have a Truxedo Lo Pro roll up. I love it. It keeps things pretty dry, rolls up without taking up too much room, or can come off completely without tools. It also allows some use of the cleat rails. Lifetime warranty from truxedo.

I've looked at the bakflip but it doesn't satisfy one of my requirements and that is that it blocks your rear window if you are driving with it fully opened. I actually really like the looks of the truxedo Deathray. My only concern would be that breaking into the bed would be as easy as slicing the cover open with a knife; otherwise seems like a good cover. Idk maybe the cover I'm looking for is a unicorn lol, but I figure if it does exist I'd be able to find it on TW.

What about a tri-fold type, one that’s easily removable, so you just pull it off rather than folding it against the window? Or have take up bedspace where it rolls up. Some relocate the bed rails into a crappy position, or use latches that stick down into the bed area and take space, or make the bed rails inoperable when covered. So be careful when picking, watch the install vids carefully. I personally prefer the OEM one over any aftermarket for the reasons listed.

I wanted a low profile bed rack and a hard locking cover. The retrax was the best option. The canister does take up nearly a foot of room but the cover has to go somewhere.
Edit: bed rails stay in factory location.

Does that one leave your bed rails usable?

I am very happy with my tonneau cover. It is Lund Genesis Elite model, trifold soft cover. It's been on my 2017 AC Tacoma for about 9 months. Zero leaks. The "Elite" model uses a premium cover material manufactured by the Harrtz Co., which produces materials for OEM convertible tops. The Elite material has a woven appearance like you would see on a convertible top on a luxury car. Lund also makes a regular Genesis trifold, which uses a vinyl material, and is less expensive.

Many detailed YouTube videos on the product and its installation. It went on fairly easy. Also, simple to remove and reinstall. It attaches to the OEM rails in the bed utilizing a clamp system. The rails and tie-downs can still be used. No need to drill or otherwise modify the truck.

I am sure there are other good products out there. Lund is the only one I have direct experience with.

Yup. There are two spots in the factory rails that hold down the cover. The rest of the rails are fulls useable.

The cover is mostly waterproof but I haven't installed the drain tubes for the canister so there is some water coming in from that.

I have a BakFlip4 still retains the rails but they sit a little lower now.
So it has full slide capability.
    Great looking cover but expensive.

I know not blocking your rear window is one on your requirements but when hauling something larger covering to back window at least to me is a great option. That's why people buy the headache racks to protect the rear window. Just one of the reasons I am thinking about the mx4

The Access Original Roll up cover is awesome. Very well designed and as water "proof" as you'd expect. Parked, not much water will get in at all. On the road You might find the equivalent of a half cup water spread around near the tailgate. But if you have a bed mat, most of the water will end up under the mat anyway.

It rolls up tightly to the back of the cab. And they use a high quality vinyl. To open, you pull down on one string in the middle at the back that unlatches both corners. This is a big improvement over other brands. Most don't actually lock on both sides. And if they do, you have to unlock each side separately.

I also like the height of the cover. It gives you about 1 1/2" extra height which comes in handy more than you think it would. It also gives the whole bed a boxier look than the low profile covers. Beefs up the appearance a little.

Access is also awesome to deal with. Top

I recently added the Tyger rollup. I think it meets your criteria. I’ve only had it a few months, so can’t speak for long term durability, but for $189 on Amazon it’s great. Opens and closes easily, and rolls up less than 6” high at the back window. The side rails do attach to the bed tracks, but only take up a few inches (2 brackets per side). We had our first rain on a camping trip this weekend and it seemed to keep things dry, though I didn’t actually drive in the rain. Full thread here:

I would think my Bak Industries Roll-x would work for you. Rolls up and leaves the back window sightline, doesn't interfere with your stock bedside rails.
