Well, this isn’t a fun one. When I left work today to found a large crack in the windshield. Sucks. I don’t remember hearing anything on the way in, but I see where it started and it was a little chip toward the bottom of the windshield at the wiper line. Either way- it’s cracked and needs replaced. I’ve been luck enough to have never run in to this on any of my previous vehicles.

Anyone have preference or concern between dealer or just a windshield joint? Price ranges? Standard or are there options?

    What do you suggest? Thanks.

Before college I worked at an Auto Glass company. Dealers used to hire us to replace the windshield at the dealership and charge the customer for their own profit. Getting aftermarket vs oemglass is just cost difference from everything I could see...when mine broke (the windshields on the Tacoma are garbage), I used a glass company and aftermarket glass.

    list is growing fast
    Insurance. Comprehensive deductible $100.

Mine chipped in same location and ended up a huge crack across entire windshield.

Mine cracked as well. In our case oem glass is cheaper than aftermarket.

Yep, rarely any dealer does their glass replacements for warranty or customer pay

Seems this varies state to state. Check with your insurance company OP.
Windshields are covered 100% in Florida, with no deductible. (your choice, OEM or aftermarket) Had more than a couple replaced over the years.

I had safelite replace a windshield in my old frontier. They did a decent job but I did have a small leak.

After working in dealerships for over 10 years, I would recommend an old school glass shop. Some of the mobile guys that come out do an alright job. It really comes down to the installer. However most are either inexperienced because they come in and out of the business or they are all about the fast buck. Most use an attachment on a sawsall and they go to town. Some beat the piss out of the interior and trim. The metal around the window usually is all scratched to hell. I’d rather have an old timer with some piano wire or something who take his pride in his work. Especially if it’s some type of collectors vehicle or something you baby and plan to keep for a long haul. Just my opinion

I’ve had luck with Safelite on other vehicles. Guess it all depends whether the installer is worth a shit or not.

    This!

On my Tacoma, I got a chip in my windshield when the truck was less than 2 weeks old. I decided to leave it alone.
It’s been a year and a half. I now have 3 chips in my glass.
I still haven’t fixed it. It’s only $100, but as long as it passes inspection it’ll stay cracked.

Went through this a few months back. I went to the dealership as my truck had lane departure assist which needed to be re-calibrated with the new windshield. Dealership themselves did not do the install of the new windshield only the calibration. I was told total cost was north of $1000 for the windshield and re-calibration but out of pocket was $500 which was my comprehensive deductible.

 Whoa! That’s a spendy new windshield... I guess that’s something I need to take into account when purchasing the next vehicle with all the new fancy safety features.

Get a $50 deductible on your comprehensive insurance. Used it many times for many different things. One is windshield cracks another is shopping cart dings
