I have got code P0012 (Camshaft Position "A" - Timing Over-Retarded (Bank 1)) several times lately. The Bank 1 Oil Control Valve was clean, worked ok and impedance was within specs, OCV filter was completely clean, camshaft chain was tight and not jumped. Engine runs well.

But which sensor can say where is the camshaft going, how the ECU knows it? There is no position sensors for them, only for the crankshaft.

The first sensor. The one on the timing cover, is for the camshaft. Passenger side.

It's possible it's a stretched timing chain. It's common on the 05to 08 Tacoma and runners and fj

The valve timing was ok, all the marks were at their place when the crank was 0°.

Would the OCV be faulty even if the resistance and working (testing with +12V battery) is ok?

Seems like it was faulty. I don't remember how it looked last time and then I had anything to compare, but now I had, ordered a new OCV:

And as you can see, the piston is not completely returned. Hopefully P0012 is gone now.

So far so good, no pending any codes now.

    Hello FinnJ,

Great you posted your issue about code P0012! I've been doing exhausting research of troubleshooting this on my '08 Taco 1GRFE. In how many miles did you see the code?

I'm also getting code P0012 (Camshaft Position "A" - Timing Over-Retarded (Bank 1), and now P0022 for Bank 2. The 0012 came in twice over the last 10K miles, now 0022 comes and goes, but no more 0012. Engine has 210,000 miles and runs like day one, with no difference when tripping a code. Thinking it might be a stretched chain as both cams are retarded. I did inspect the OCV's, clean, but will have to see if they are fully retracted. I hear springs get weak on Ford units. Wouldn't a not retracting spring like yours cause an over advanced condition?

How are you doing with codes now? I plan on doing the chain regardless. I took a look under the tensioner inspection plate and see its extended 5 notches viewing underneath with an inspection mirror. I wonder how extended it would be with a new chain or at the end of travel. real EZ to get at, just 4 10mm bolts.

Anybody out there see stretched chains? I just watched a Youtube video on a guy with a Four Runner had an 0016 code that found a stretched chain.

OK, an update and back to this after 225,000 mi...

I was getting a 0012, then a 0022 (over advanced) not retarded, but perhaps I am, ha as I stated a retarded condition in my previous post.

I haven't seen these codes come back for a few thousand miles now, but thinking my oil control solenoids return springs are just getting worn out and not letting oil pressure push back the cam phasers and will try this cheap replacement 1st. I would think a stretched chain would result in overly retarded condition that would not go away. Oil pressure is in spec and using correct oil viscosity with no sludge seen.

Any fix for this? Did a head gasket change at 220k .p0012 code. Changed ocv cleared the filter next to the dipstick . Had a cam brake after installing everything . The truck is in Conroe tx if anyone wants to waste their time as well .

Yes, right and left is with different part number. But did you changed both?
