I took this to mean recommendations for amber SAE pods. But yes, I’ll put together a section in this thread devoted to just amber lights with recommendations.

In the comparison of the two Rigid versions, the new prototype appears to have a shorter beam. Was that the case? The original Rigid looks to cover more vertical space.

 

Good question.

The pictures in the spectrometer screen shots are not relative. You can see that the lights using the cover appear brighter in that photo, which is overexposed. I think I was trying to capture the cut offs in that one where as the other I was trying to capture color without overexposing the shot. Really a DSLR would be more appropriate.

But in short the beam pattern width is the same for both lights.

They aren't available yet. That is a pre-production unit he was testing.

Just curious but have you tested the older version of the Rigid Dot pods compared to the newer version? I am running the first version and was told by sidetracked that the new ones are brighter, although not by much. Do you have any info between the two by chance?

 

As @DirtJumper14 mentioned, these are pre-production prototypes, production has not started. But they are coming soon.

The LEDs did not change at all, it is just the optics. Claims are wider, brighter and smoother pattern. Makes me curious how much of the amber gains were due to the new optics as I did compare it to the previous SAE model I had on file. I'll have to ask Rigid's engineering team.

Wow I really didn’t think the performance would be that great. Do you think the lens could be backwards compatible? For the people that have the clear rigid currently?
Now the race for amber options has upped the ante.
Excited to see the Amber KC G4’s

 

Optics and lens are swappable with the current SAE pod. However getting just those parts may be a challenge.

And don’t forget Morimoto is launching an amber SAE pod too. I’ve got them on order as well.

 

I ordered a set of KC G4 ambers for C$330 a few days ago, so I rushed to compare your G4 test results with these new Rigids. G4 white tested out at 296 lux, and according to KC website output of the amber is the same (doesn't seem correct). To me, the Rigid construction looks bomb proof but output is not that much more than the G4s (318), and the Rigids are likely to be way more $. So G4 looks to be slightly better value for money?

 

KC shows the same lux numbers for the amber G4 as they do their white G4 on their website, which I agree doesn’t seem accurate but if so it would be an impressive feat. Rigids use a filtering lens over a white LED which is less efficient than KCs true amber LED source, and KC uses more efficient reflectors on top of that. If the KC ambers are indeed the same output level, then the Rigids would be just slightly higher in output (almost a wash at 7%) and their color temp will be a little more yellow vs KC which will be a bit more amber according to the specs. I personally like the near stock stealthy look of the KCs far more than the pod look which also requires adapter plates. The one real advantage to the Rigids would be the heated lens caused by filtering out the short wavelength light. I should get the KC G4 ambers next month for a better comparison.
