They made a prototype mount that mounts on the extrusion. It was on a 4runner on their instagram.

 

Ya thats gonna be the plan. It shouldn't be too hard finding some with a bit more force if needed.

I guess another concern would be how the hinges will hold up ripping around on trails.

@wileydavis Do you know how much weight we could put on the doors before the hinges give up?

 

I saw it in IG, seems like it’d be kinda tall.

Force on the “hinges” would be a valid concern though when it’s closed up I wouldn’t think it’d be much of an issue.

That link that I attached shows a device that shouldn’t put any force on the panel or GFC... hmmmmm. Somebody make this happen. I know for sure I’m not going to poke a hole in my side panels. So it’s high on the extrusion (gotta leave room for the side panel to operate, which is NOT a concern on the RTT), or for now just leave them where they are...



Works pretty well honestly and now that the GFC is on there it doesn’t feel like such a parachute.

 

I’ve used a ratchet strap and two bungees to attach the maxtrax to my swing out. Not sexy or EAF but it works and was free. I asked about using the maxtrax pin mounts on the side panels when I was picking my GFC up from the shop and was told it wouldn’t be the best idea.

I guess. I’m not all that scared. To be honest if someone wants to steal something they’re gonna. The lock keeps it from being easy to just unlatch and take them. I don’t take them to the mall or the movies and I don’t abandon my truck in camp grounds. I guess if someone has bolt cutters and they’re cruising around just looking to steal my Trax I’m out of luck. But really. Have you ever seen how easy it is to push in a door on a house? I mean security is mostly an illusion. If someone is determined it’s not likely you’re gonna stop them.

 

Shoot... If I get my camper with enough time before my trip, this could be something my friend could make me and maybe he could make 2! (the same friend that made my swingarm). He said to just bring it by and we could have fun with making stuff but I don't think I will have time given my tight timeframe between when I hopefully get the camper and my trip!

 

You can break 90% of them with 2 box wrenches from Harbor Freight, with minimal effort.

 

True, I just envisioned going to the mall with those on lol, or even an overnight sleep at Walmart. Not trying to re-hash the security paranoia

 

Exactly. Why worry.... truly my ditch lights would be a lot easier and faster to steal. But my truck stays in my garage. Or with me.... so I’m not really worried. Now i wanna take my truck to the mall lol...

 

Ha! You're thinking is right in line with what I've got planned. Sort of like a keyed lug nut that's difficult to turn by hand. There are a bit more parts to it, basically a plate that covers the slot and has a pin so that when the keyed bolt is tight you couldn't lever the thing open. Will also serve double duty as a cover plate for the slot. Difficult to describe but it's clear in my head

Speaking of difficult to turn by hand, those round knobs can be a real PITA to loosen in the dead of winter. Ask me how I know But that was in -15F weather.

 

It looks like a nice piece of gear but I think it might be too much on the outside. I'm still going to advocate for maxtrax going under a bed platform where the other dirty things go.

Aside from all the likes you'll get on instagram, how often are you guys getting stuck to need your maxtracks mounted on the outside of your GFC?

I've put thousands and thousands of off road miles on my truck, and never once thought they would be very helpful.

 

The malls around here are getting pretty rough.

I better get a spikey shovel and a fiskars axe to bolt on the outside of my rig somewhere along with the maxi-tracks.

 

If I had a way to clean them after use I would love to put them back in the truck. Unfortunately when I use them it’s usually in thick, nasty swamp mud. A way to strap them outside the truck is nice.

Are you going to put all your GFC mods in a thread? Now that doording is gone, that thread for GFC mods is gone too and I was adding some of your stuff to my list of ideas/things to do

 

Where I generally go the only thing that works is a yank or a winch. Tried those before and found them utterly useless if you go on smaller tight trails. Reason I saw that is cause generally on small trails the rig is not exactly level with the ground and all it takes is a high center or rear end in the air and nothing will get you out but a winch. But we go out in deep mud in the UP in Michigan, so terrain is vastly different. I would 100% upgrade to front and rear lockers before ever spending on those. Luckily I have those already . Only thing worth the money in my eyes is a winch.

 

I guess it really depends on where you live and where you wheel, high in the ROCK-ies maybe traction mats are not to useful at all. I’ve got 10 days coming up in November on the Cape Lookout National seashore and OBX (providing they don’t get too fucked up by Hurricanes this year) and I can assure 1000X over you’d rather have Maxtrax than a winch or anything else you could carry. The fact that people are so judgy on here is ridiculous. I mean come on we live 2000 miles apart, just because you think they’re silly doesn’t mean they don’t have an application. Jesus.... truth be told 9 times out of 10 I use them to level my rig when parking for the night but wheeling alone on sand I promise you, there’s an application.... like when your sunk in sand and there’s NOTHING to hook a winch too, I’ve heard guys bury a spare in the sand and use that, but than you need a Rad shovel mounted to your rig, and you don’t like those either, lol, not to mention digging a huge hole in the sand is a lot of freaking work. If you don’t like Maxtrax don’t carry them, but don’t tell me or anyone else on here they don’t have a purpose just because they don’t for you...
