Sounds about right. That's around what we charge at our shop here in NJ.

    This is correct.

Also, there are many more ratios available for the 8" vs the 8.75" at ECGS's site such as 4.56.

Anyone heard of an ETA for 4.56 in the 8.75? I’m holding out for this, I feel like 4.88 and 265/75/16r is a little much but I’d love to have the low end torque.

4.56 isn't on any companies radar at the moment. In real-world testing, the 4.56 hasn't shown any point in being produced for a 3rd gen . We have done an 8in 3rd gen with 4.56 and it wasn't impressive at all vs the 4.88 even on stock tires. SO as of right now no future what so ever with any of the companies. Nitro, motive, Yukon or revolution. I'm sure if I can get 300+ confirmed orders of 4.56 in 8.75in I could definitely make it happen though!

I was quoted $2400.00 for both axles parts and labor, Nitro gears.Does that sound about right? I need to ask them about the REM option. Any other questions I should ask. Thx TW peeps

If you can, get multiple quotes from a handful of reputable shops.

4.56 would be negligible difference. 4.88 is a good ratio. I’m now on 5.29s with stock tires and truck drives great.

So I have been following many topics on TW and finally decided to sign up and join the conversation.
In regards to the 4.88 thread I saved up the $$$ and pulled the trigger on putting new gears in.
My 2017 4wd off-road package Tacoma has 22000 miles on it. I will be having my 3rd set of 4.88’s put in the rear diff to try and resolve a whine between 55mph and 70mph ( more pronounced on deceleration ). Of course the manufacturers says it the installer and the installer says it the manufacturer). No need to throw anyone under the bus so I don’t want to name names. HAS ANYONE ELSE HAD THIS PROBLEM?
I have followed break in procedure 100% maybe even more than required.

Yikes. It’s a 3rd gen problem. Interesting that even aftermarket gears aren’t fixing it.

I had the Toyota TSB installed and I’m still getting the howl.

    See https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads...oise-howling-when-feathering-throttle.442341/

Who’d you buy the gears from?

I’m hoping it’s not Yukon. I’ve had a lot of luck with their stuff.

Yes I read the thread about factory whine, but mine never had that problem with stock gears.

I do not have any extra gears. The installer has just replaced them and kept the gears. I really like the 4.88’s but can’t handle the whine. Makes my $40000 truck worthless.

Why did they keep the gears? Those are your gears...

warranty. you don't keep gears you say are bad and do a warranty exchange on.

my shop explicitly stated they would buy the gears so any warranty issues would go through them. i paid about $2500 for everything including ecgs bushing.

I may have misunderstood. I thought the installer kept the stock gears..

I have stock 3.90 and will not go back to them. I’m going to try one more set that they are willing to put in to try and see if it’s better. The 4.88’s are way better than stock as far as drivability. It should come from the factory with them or at a minimum 4.56’s. ( a small 4.7 V8 would fix everything!!).
