I doubt you'll see that in our lifetimes. The design concepts that make those boats so fast also make them incredibly unstable, so even scaled up they wouldn't be suited to crossing oceans. Imagine sailing a 75 foot yacht across the Atlantic at 45 knots...

Then imagine pitchpoling a 75 foot yacht at 45 knots 600 miles from shore because you caught a strong gust from astern that knocked you off the planes and hooked the bow before the computers could luff the sails (or wings, whatever)

    images_ada4f778ddf241caaf5dd0375e1b90d213721fc2.jpg

    Edit-
But, I could be wrong. I mean, the tech that companies like Oceanco and Royal Huisman are using (and the boats they're building with it) would have been inconceivable just 20 years ago. :notsure:

I wouldn’t be surprised to see it work I think the hardest part will be keeping the foils attached. Seems like 1/3 of all fast ocean racers drop out from a race after losing a foil/rudder from a semi submerged piece of trash or they cut a shark in half like donnybrook.

Maybe. They'd probably have to be hugely reinforced carbon fiber anyway, so scaling them up like that would probably make them that much more durable (sort of like a tree is stronger than a sapling) so they probably wouldn't be as susceptible to damage as the smaller, lighter versions that are currently used on the smaller racing boats.

Damn, I just found this thread.

Single handing it from the trapeze when it's blowing ~15 is my happy place, where all my problems go away. It's too bad that I've been too busy being an adult and working on home improvement projects to sail it much the past two years. I'll probably have to break down and buy a big fat cruiser whenever we finally have kids.

Well, the temperatures went from 85 to 55 like it saw a state trooper. In Ohio that means pullout time. Want to get her out in the next week or to before they start to lower the lake for winter. How about you?

You can’t go from a fast cat to a cruiser!! Maybe a cruiser racer.

I hauled mine last Tuesday sadly I ordered a new racing spinnaker from a local place mid July.... still has not arrived. The plan was to haul it after running the new kite a few times but sadly I got porked.

Last year I ordered a new first of its kind North 3DI. And it took 9 months. So I thought I would got with a local guy. Guess that was a poor choice.

I wanted to sail one more time, but 55* is miserable in the rain, so I bundled up and spent the afternoon de-rigging and getting my cover ($20 tarp) on....

I also spent a couple hours helping some of the cruisers pull their boats. Our lake was already down enough that one of the Catalina 25s had to pull his rudder and try to steer with his outboard.

We attempted to go get our boat from Bear Lake and bring back home for winter storage but the weather had different ideas. Snowy roads. 27 degree temps. Wind. Snow and ice on the boat. Its supposed to warm up to 60 on Thursday so we'll play hookie for work and grab the boat then.

I didnt have a chance to build my frame and tarp the boat when i brought her to the winter home...just my luck a winter storm rolled in and left about a foot of snow...so this weekend i go back over the pass to spend Saturday shoveling out the cockpit and sweeping snow off the deck, then building a frame and tarping it while its probably still snowing. Then sunday we're going pre opening-skiing at Grand Targhee, about 30 miles away haha.

    ALL DONE

So stoked to see a sailing community on here! I just started sailing this year, and got a 1978 Bayliner Buccaneer 180. It's old and could use a paint job, but its been an awesome project. So far we have redone all of the wood and wiring. Next year I hope to tackle the paint. I'm up in Montana so our sailing season is pretty short unfortunately, but I can't wait to get her on the water again next year!

I see you are in Jackson, do you ever make your way up to Hebgen lake?

I have not, with jackson and yellowstone in my backyard and the Mediterranean of the west (bear lake) 2.5 hours south, towing the boat that far north doesen't make a whole lot of sense unfortunately

Fair enough, I live in Jackson for the summers so I’m excited to get out on the lakes down there. Just gotta find a place to keep my boat...

I’ve kept her on the street the first summer, and the last half of this summer when I moved to a house with less driveway parking lol
