    Hello everyone,

I recently bought a 1998 Tacoma and have been doing some work to get her up to par. My brother noticed that there was only 1 strap holding up the fuel tank. I have looked around a lot and have not been able to locate an official answer yet. How many fuel tank straps are on a 1998 Tacoma TRD 3.4? If only 1 strap how is the front of the gas tank supported?

Thanks for the help I have only been filling up half the tank thinking I need a 2nd fuel tank strap.

There are two straps. Part numbers, assuming it's 4WD and not PreRunner:

    #10 - front - 77601-35040
    #11 - rear - 77603-35020

EDIT: I think that #10 front is for Std Cab 4WD only, not needed for Ext Cab.

Picture of my 98 from below. I see one strap in the back and then mointrd to the frame cross member in thr front. Might be 2 as the diagram above shows.

PreRunner would have a different amount of straps versus 4x4?

Thanks for the reply and part numbers! It is a 4wd, so I will be ordering the front one (missing) soon.

    Same number of straps.

I think I messed this up on my first reply - looks like the front strap is for Std Cab only, so you likely only have one strap, in the rear. At least, that's how I read the parts list on a second look...

Thanks for making me look again @BartMaster1234 - and here's the tank specs as well (#1) that get to your question...

oh, crap! just went through this again. Mine only has 1 strap and it's a 1998 4wd, extended cab. So I'm not missing a strap then? I will climb under her tonight and do a better visual inspection as initially I couldn't find where the front one would go.

Makes sense. I believe 5-lugs are different too since they have 15 gallon tanks versus 18 gallon on 6-lugs.

That's exactly what I found on my 98 and it's a 4x4. 1 strap in the rear. Mounted to the crossmember. Kind of hard to see with the skid pan on there.

Only one strap for the gas tank, but the front is bolted to the crossmember in front of the tank.
Also, depending if you have the 5lug or 6lug, the strap isn't the same. 5lug is shorter while 6lug is longer (15 gallon vs 18 gallon tank)

I took the fuel sender out of a 5-lug and it was one strap.

5+ years in use and still holding up great. If I were to do this again i would paint the whole tank. I don't have any rust on it yet and paint still looks good, I wish I could say the same for the rest of the truck. Damn you Minnesota for the crap you put on our roads!!!
