I wanted the Max but I carry my phone on my hip at work with an OtterBox case. I didn’t want like an iPad hanging from my hip haha

Been running my tail off this week.. we're short a couple people, so they've got me split between 2 locations morning and afternoon.

Thats a good one. How big you think it is?

We had a bear come visit us in Cherokee, NC. We had the window cracked and about 7am he stuck his nose in. Woke up to a bear 3 feet from me. The window sill was 5 feet off the ground.

Oh man, I'd have to clean my shorts after that. If I had to guess maybe 250-300ish? I know of a few adolescent males around but this one seems a few years old.

If I weren't still asleep I would have been less afraid. Once I screamed the bear was more afraid of me and it was gone gone.

I always worry about encountering one when I take the dogs out or walk out to the garage at night. Always take a flashlight with me lol.

Oh hell yea. Have you seen the show where folks talk about what they survived? The one guy got F'd up by a bear while walking his dogs. Pistol and flashlight when I go walking in Cherokee.

My parents bought a cabin on a mountain facing Table Rock and when we moved them in, we discovered that a bear had been living under the porch and had dug a hot tub sized area in the clay to be able to hibernate. I heard it scratching with its claws to get into the pantry from underneath the first night we were there. Being on the mountain allowed it to walk up the slope on the mountain and under the deck. Turns out, it was a pregnant momma bear, which was a no-go for my mom walking the dogs.

Worked with DNR and tranquilized the bear and we had to crawl up under there and drag it out. They took the bear somewhere else and made it a den before it woke up. We spent the next few hours sealing the access under the porch up.

Now the momma bear and her cubs come by and steal the bird feeders if my mom leaves them out, but otherwise they are harmless. Pretty skittish and hate barking dogs, so if you are worried about bears the dogs should help :). My mom also carries bear mace.

That's wild, I never considered that a bear might den under the porch! We're two miles down the road from Table Rock State Park. Do they still have that cabin?

They do! Moved in there a few years ago.

They're in the river bluff section, up past Aunt Sues and the Victoria Valley Vineyard.

Nice! We're on Rockcrest Ridge, I think it's the road before Aunt Sues. It's a beautiful area, just the first time I've had to be "bear aware" at home.

Absolutely love the area. Parents love the bears too. I swear every room in the cabin is bear themed.

The dumpsters at Aunt Sue's are a favorite of the bears we have seen

Lol, I bet, I always drive by there on the way to the dump station and it's just piled high with garbage. My neighbor puts corn out for the deers/bear so I'm sure we'll be seeing them often :der:

If you're backpacking alone just make noise while you walk talk to yourself sing whatever. Some people wear bear bells. Just keep an eye out if you see one just stop and watch from a distance sometimes you can walk up on them and they not even know you're there. You'll be fine though. I'm not worried about the black bears as I am the grizzlies (thankfully not around these parts). Grizzlies I've found to be much more curious and brazen than blacks.

If you ever go out west. Someone told me the best way to decipher the 2. :D

That one is prolly 200-250 lbs. actually quite young since the ears are still pointy and close. Once they get some age the ears will splay out and become rounded. I love bears, they taste amazing! Just make sure to cook the meat to 160/165 degrees.D6EA78AE-649A-4D54-ABDF-6DACAE803CF2.jpg

Grizzlies scare the bejeebus out of me. We did a mountain bike trip out west from Alberta to Colorado in 2016. We had a few grizzlies run off into the woods when we rode by (thankfully) and our only encounters were curious black bears who didn't really seem to mind our presence. Great trip but I found myself wanting more than bear spray when we were camping in the woods and I'd hear branches snapping at night!
