Language isn't an issue. 10 years Navy, and the last 10 as an industrial tech, my kids have heard worse than you could imagine.
The true victory is they don't talk like I do.

And I'm hoping to have a barn up in a couple years myself

There is a lot of stuff that people don't expect when owning a home, and you never know when something will break. I'm actually looking into a Kubota myself now that I won't have my fathers to use and I have a lot I want to do to the land and snow to move out of parking lots. It really can be a never ending spending spree. I am trying to only finance as little as absolutely possible so I don't fall into that trap.

I'll talk to the wife and make sure what weekends we won't have anything going on and try to get some possible dates together and start a thread.

Yeah it really can be dangerous up in these rural areas if you aren't prepared or know how the roads go. And GPS sending people the "fastest" way, even if it is through a road with a bridge out, or one that doesn't even exist really anymore doesn't help. I've started carrying winter stuff and a mini food/blanket set up when the snow starts. I've had a few instances where I have been messing around in the woods and gotten myself stuck. Had to walk about 5 miles two years ago through a foot or more of snow after sliding into a ditch I couldn't get out of. Had my cousin come up and we drove the backhoe down to get it. Not everyone has a backhoe or the ability to walk 5 miles in that type of snow. Accidents happen, but lots of people (myself included) don't even give the risks an honest look.

I usually give a polite opportunity to walk away.
If they persist, I give them my point of view.

I respect everyone's right to believe what they want in regards to Religion. But, I also expect to left alone regarding whatever I do, or don't believe.

My smartass self isn't that simple. I figure just to see the tats should be enough. If not I'm too happy to talk about the altar boy scandal (for reference I was raised strict Catholic)

    Too much.
Anyone in the Nashua do their needle bearing? I think mine has failed (and if it hasn't, whatever) and I'd like to change it out to the ECGS bearing, and this is something way outside my knowledge base, in a system I would rather not fuck with.

Until your landlord raises your rental rates, of course.
I pay property taxes, yes, of $2000 a year (although the town just bounced my assessment by $20k because of the improvements I've done, so it'll likely go up a bit this year) But those are the only aspect of owning a home vs renting that don't have the potential to someday pay me back, and they earn me a break on my income taxes anyway. My monthly mortgage payment is less than what I'd be paying in rent for a similar living space, even if you figure in taxes, insurance, heat, electricity, and the occasional surprise repair or maintenance costs. However, I'll readily admit that they're only like that because I bought a foreclosure and have spent roughly $5k thus far on a slow repair/renovation.

Granted, rental expenses are fixed, but they're also $$ that you'll never get any sort of return on (other, obviously, than having a roof over your head). Say you're spending $1000 in month for rent. Let's say you live there for 10 years, then decide to move. You don't have to deal with the headache of selling a house, but you'll have spent $120,000 with no possibility of a return of any of it. Which is the biggest reason I'm opposed to renting in the long-term. :notsure:

As for the money you used to spend in flowers...what the hell were you thinking?! :p :der:

Edit- as for the tractor and the plow, I figure as far as toys go they tend to hold their value better than sleds :boink:

I'm kinda in the same boat.
Had a Slayer album sticker on the storm door of one place, seemed to do the trick?

Dont think ink really scares them off anymore.
In fact, I think I've been approached more BECAUSE of it... I dunno....

And I was raised in a Roman Catholic house, church whatever. Not too sure how that affects my current views versus life....

My ink just might scare religious folks. I haven't shown my family and will not either.

All-in-all, mortgage, taxes, insurance, utilities, even counting internet I'm around $1300/month. To rent an equivalent house I'd probably be at that easily for rent alone, probably more like $1600 with utilities. Even if I spend $3k/year in unexpected expenses (it hasn't been anywhere close to that so far) I'm still ahead. I don't count improvements that I want to (but don't need to do) into that figure because they generally add value. The way I look at it is I'll have the house paid off in my 40s easily. Then I have a substantial asset that is exactly how I want it.

Depending on the weekend, I would also be willing to join and meet some of the local TW members. I have a LONG list of work but I won’t force anybody to work on a rusted 99 4Runner :anonymous:

Yeah but the point is they are still fixed costs. I know at the beginning of every year when I sign a new lease what my costs will be annually. That's what I like. And not buying freakin' $4800 in teak lawn furniture for the patio is something I like too. It would be a lot different owning a home now that I don't have a wife, I can say that.

OMG, nothing is a worse financial value than sleds... literally nothing. Possibly an investment in a huge bag of heroin is worse, but I am not even sure about that.

And then you'll probably want a bigger and badder house, with a bigger and badder mortgage, and hopefully you don't borrow against your house to buy a pool or something that does nothing but actually decrease the value of your property... And all that asset/equity is only good as long as the housing market doesn't tank, which however unlikely, is certainly a possibility. If you are smart, bought smart, and it sounds like you are and did, you will not borrow against your house and stay in it forever or at least until long after it's paid off.

All I am saying is there is more to it than most people think and renting can be very sound financially.

It really just sounds like your wife made owning a house a bad investment. Which brings us to today's lesson, boys and girls: Wives are bad investment.

Even boats are better than sleds (better's the wrong word...less bad?), which definitely gives an idea of how bad sleds are

Eh, I'm pretty simple. This house is already too big for one person, definitely wouldn't want bigger. Funny, I looked at a few with pools and figured if I made an offer I would have written into the terms that they need to get rid of the thing before closing because I had no desire to deal with it.

People do get into trouble with home equity loans. I do projects little by little and set aside money to pay for them all at once.

I even hate the fact that I have a loan on this truck--I call it my one irresponsible financial decision. Realistically, given that I only use the truck as a truck a few times a year I could get by with a few thousand dollar Subaru. But, the loan isn't an awful amount and I'm trying to pay it off as quickly as possible--and I drive a lot so I figure I might as well enjoy it.

OMG, yes, wives are the worst investment ever. We bought that solid teak furniture and while it was gorgeous, she ended up wanting something completely different 2 years later. It became a arguing point for years.
