So I’ll be picking up my 19 TRD OR DCSB MT in a about a week and it’s my first Tacoma and first new car.

The dealership is about 4 hours away from my house (I live in a small mountain town).

I’m wondering if anyone does anything different to ‘break in’ a new vehicle? Or is there anything that I should be more aware of with a brand new car?

Thanks and looking forward to joining the club!

    Breaking in your new Toyota
To extend the life of the vehicle, observing the following precautions is recommended:
    ●For the first 200 miles (300 km):
    Avoid sudden stops.
    ●For the first 500 miles (800 km):
    Do not tow a trailer.
    ●For the first 1000 miles (1600 km):
    • Do not drive at extremely high speeds.
    • Avoid sudden acceleration.
    • Do not drive continuously in low gears.
    • Do not drive at a constant speed for extended periods.

Don’t worry about it, just drive it and enjoy it. For peace of mind you can check all fluids when you get it home. Oil isn’t scheduled to be changed until 10k.

Post pics when you pick it up! I've seen people go off road almost immediately after purchase. As a general rule I like to wait 500 miles at least, 1k if possible for things to break in. Other than that, just enjoy!

Welcome to TW! Post some pics of the truck once you get it!

You don't need to worry about "breaking in" your new truck. Just drive it like normal and you'll be fine. Definitely take advantage of those free oil changes from the dealership and everything should be smooth sailing.

If you do have any questions about something specific, there is a lot of information and knowledgeable people on here.

Its similar to a gear break-in which may be what this is based around. Not shockloading the driveline or overheating the differential oils. Though they only make it as a recommendation.

You can do what @JoeCOVA and @Rockefelluh recommended, which is what I did. Enjoy breaking it in slowly. You'll have plenty of time to off-road, tow, etc. Congrats and post a pic when you get it.

Not sure how particular you are on the appearance, but I would go ahead and tell the dealership not to wash or detail it then do it yourself to avoid a bunch of swirl marks and possible scratches that the dealer will create. While it’s new it would be good to detail, maybe even clay bar then put a good coating, sealant, or wax on it.

    Congrats and Enjoy!

Yeah I’m planning on taking it pretty easy on her for a while, but I’m sure I’ll have a snowy mountain pass or two to test her out on the first trip. :headbang:

Lots of good info on this site, thanks guys!

Post number two pretty much nailed it.

On the 4x4, you should run in 4 wheel drive at least once a month for around 10 miles.
Lots of folks buy them and never take it off road. In 4 wheel drive just make sure you are off road and not on the street. It is for the front differential that needs to be exercised.
That was mentioned in the owners manual.

4 hours - one way - from the dealer? Good luck and wish no problems.
