Agreed. In my perfect world, all cars would have that and a setting that allows the owner to choose keyed or non-keyed power for the window buttons. Most, if not all, of that functionality is already built in.

I do like that the windows can still be used for a bit after shut down.

My '08 Lexus IS did this. You would think 10 years later that technology could have trickled down to the Tacoma.

If you are speaking of the Carista BT dongle, my first one would intermittently shit the bed and drop the connection. Returned it and got another, no issues. They can definitely be DOA.

Are you using the Carista app as well or something else?

Sadly, this one doesn't show the calibration ID. Maybe they will fix that down the road.

In the end, it is a huge improvement for folks with two sets of wheels and sensors.

    There are two chimes.

The first is mandated by the NHTSA and is either 5 beeps or 5 seconds along with visual flash.

The second is completely optional, tied to vehicle speed and can be disabled via dealer, Techstream or Carista Pro for both driver and passenger.

The phone pairs to the OBII device. The OBII device talks to the ECU.

The app uses the BT connection to speak to the device and the ECU.

Different adapters can be tricky, some want to be in accessory mode, others want the engine running when pairing/connecting

Has it paired, and if yes, is the device in "connected status" when you open the app?

Returned the faulty one, and received another no questions asked. Worked like a charm. Thanks for all the help

Lemme preface by saying that we wear seat belts all the time. We just don't have them on when backing in and out of the garage for a bit of extra movement in the tight space. The most dangerous part of any drive is getting out of our cul de sac.

For whatever reason, once I turned off the seat belt chime, I get nothing more than the flashing dash light. There is no secondary chime now. Prior to turning it off, there was a slow tone and a faster tone if the seat belt wasn't fastened soon enough. It seemed to be time based?

The NHTSA wrote a detailed review of a commissioned study.

They took into consideration the level of annoyance these secondary times had and their pros and cons.

I remember reading that one pro was that the more annoying the more likely someone would buckle up.

They also concluded that a significant percentage I remember thinking above 35% complained that the distraction when backing up posed a significant challenge to safety when reversing.

I recently opened a ticket with Toyota because my local dealer was refusing to disable the alarm. I was able to get someone from the nhtsa to write Toyota and explain the difference between the mandatory chime and the secondary chime. They also explained that the distraction created by the secondary chime has been a factor in low speed and reverse accidents involving pedestrians or other vehicles.

Bottom line: Toyota is now on the hook for their decision to make the chime a dealer discretion versus user option. There will be no hiding behind "we did not disable for liability reasons".

Toyota and the dealer reduce their liability of someone suing them because the vehicle didn't warn them to buckle up, but ncrease their liability if the driver claims they were distracted when they backed over someone.

Good info! I like my dealer so far and they seem very willing to listen, but due to the ease of the Carista app, including my failure to cancel the free trial in time, I didn't bother asking the dealer to go through this or try to get them to install the ECU TSB(s) on my MT Taco.

In the past with a much more useless dealer, we STRUGGLED to get them to change the auto door lock function on a convertible that we had because doing so also killed the panic function on the remote. In that car, the problem was that the door lock tab was further back than the seat backs and very hard for us to even reach. I could imagine an accident situation would have made that even more difficult? That and other much worse experiences have taught me to do things at home for reasonable amounts of money versus the stress and frustration of dealing with random service advisers. Just me, I suppose?

Yes, my old Carista dongle would connect without issue the 1st time after being plugged in to the OBD port (engine running). I could then bring up my custom dashboard and have real time information on my phone as I drove (yes I have a proper mount for it). Then the connection would inexplicably drop and would not come back until the BT dongle was physically disconnected from the OBD port and then plugged back in. I returned that device and got a new one - no further issues since. Well, there WAS one issue - the setup I was running could not handle logging of more than a few PIDs at a time. That got solved by using techstream, and later OVtune's logger.

Can anyone point me to the cheapest third-party dongle that has been proven to work?

LoL! Mine is 5yrs old that I got off of newegg.com for $14. It was noted to have the ELM327 chip and was verified to work with Torque. So for the use that I got out of it, pretty damn cheap when OBD tools were still in the hundreds.

As far as I know, the best deal going is straight from Carista? $20 for an adapter and a free months access to the full app. The adapter can be used with all other OBD apps.

    :rofl::rofl: Umm, no?

Also, my year subscription ended back in October.

You can get a free week if you sign up for the same trial that I did. That covers the cheap side of things?

Like I said, even at the accidental $40 cost, I felt it was worth it to get those options set without any gruff at the dealer.
