Will a 2015 short bed tonneau cover fit on a 2018 short bed? I have heard mixed things so far

    Probably depends on the manufacturer.

3rd gen toprails are 1.5” longer than 2nd gens.

the brackets will not work properly. As stated by T4RFMFW "3rd gen toprails are 1.5” longer than 2nd gens."

the cover fits fine size wise but you have to modify the brackets some how to secure the cover. I have seen a guy use longer bolts and use a second bolt as a locking bolt to extent the "pinching" of the bracket to the bed cap.

Will not work. Even if you cheated it on, it would let water in and never fit right. I have yet to see someone leave it on after trying it. It's at least 1" longer, you need a new one.

All aftermarket tonneau covers are generic and made to fit a wide range of trucks, only the mounting hardware is specific to a particular truck. They don’t make them to only perfectly fit a Tacoma. So the fact that the 2nd and 3rd gen beds are very slightly different in size may not matter, it all depends on how the manufacturer sized the tonneau for the selected range of trucks they went after. This is why you will see some tonneau covers that just touch the tailgate, and some that extend passed the tailgate.

So, the actual answer is it will depend on the manufacturer. If you have one in mind, contact that particular manufacturer.
