Anyone ever build their own welder from a spare gas engine and alternator? I read something about this a while ago and may give it a whirl.

You can do it cheaper with a couple of 12 volt batteries, too.

I'm good with buying a welding machine.

Yea I hear you, I have 3 that work perfectly fine. It is more just for something to keep me off the streets. I don't think you can do anything thick and the beads don't look good and I agree it is easier and probably not much more to just buy one. Having said that I like to tinker and find things out the hard way.

Pretty hard without a hard physical guide of some sort. Freehanding it comes out kinda sloppy when I try it. I can’t get nicer tighter notches than what my notcher can produce

Got my hands on two laser cut 16” diameter circles cut out of 1/4” plate steel (scrap from someone’s job). Now to figure out what I’m gonna do with it.

If your good with electronics and can design and build your own control circuits that will be the challenge what good is having a welder .
With output at one set point

Plan on a Cap bank to smooth out the output ?

Weld them together and make it into a welding table. Even better if you put it on a swivel so you can sit and weld and rotate the table :)

I couldn't have guessed any closer to where the spindle ended.

Pray tell just how did you bend the spindle ??

Was it like that when you installed the axle??

    To many Hard landings ?

Nah. It was a used axle that I recycled. I first thought it was a bent axle. Those are easy to repair. I didn't find this had a bent spindle until I pulled the hub.

Its hard to see a bent spindle/hub without a tire attached, so I didn't find out until I was towing it, that it was bad.

How did you clear out the propane take before cutting? Fill with water? Dry ice?

I've been too scared to cut any open! :bananadead:
