Okay, so I put the 10k resistor in the EGR plug after unplugging the negative battery cable. Check engine light for p0401 is off.

The weird thing is that my idle has gone up to 1750 with the resistor in place.. wtf?

Now I know that the code being thrown isn't why my idle is running high, I can at least start to troubleshoot, knowing that it is not codes causing my engine to compensate and run high.

Im going to see if adjusting the idle screw does anything, now that I have no codes..it did nothing before with CEL on.

Anyone know if a plugged up old exhaust would cause a high idle? still running original muffler, new Cat.

Also, I will know more when my ultragauge shows up!!

There is a chance that maybe your EGR is plugged up with carbon, this happened to me at about 300,000 miles
If so you have to dig out the carbon of the tubes with a pick

 

Okay so I’ve replaced my PCV valve and grommet and hose (old PCV valve was filthy and inside of the valve cover when I took out the old PCV was super dirty), The idle has not changed, I’m going to disconnect the battery for a little and see if that changes the idle. I suspect it won’t. I’m going to try cleaning the EGR* valve like you said, even though I’ve got it blocked off, maybe it’s still stuck..

Ahhh shit yeahhhhh!!!! Thermostat was the issue!!! Not getting hot enough and telling the ECM to stay in the high idle from cold start.

I just replaced it with a Napa thermostat while I wait for an oem replacement.

I was reading 150-160 on my ultragauge and now I’m reading 201 is that to hot? Now that’s what I’m sitting at.
But my idle is a clean 700 now!!!!!! Oh my god I am so happy right now, as I was typing this now I’m reading 203.

 

Should be 185-190

 

you thinK an after market would run a little high? or maybe water pump is going? it is reading right perfectly in the middle of my temp gauge.

 

You have to use the ultra guage for a correct number, put the OEM thermostat and make sure the jigger is in the correct position as it will run 5-7 degrees hotter if installed incorrectly.
Your water pump is probably ok
Did you burp the system correctly when you refilled the radiator?
The water hoses going to the heater core are higher than the radiator so you might have air pockets.
Did you fill the radiator and make sure the heater core valve was open to fill that
section too?
If you didn’t burp the system correctly it will run hot

 

Thermostat is installed with the jiggle valve down.

And I’m thinking that an air pocket is likely, I probably didn’t burp it correctly. How should one go about doing that?

 

Bolted up the new driveshaft today, she feels super stable now! Thanks again for the info for that, saved a lot of time looking for a quality shaft.

yes I was amazed. I went ahead and went with the 2 day shipping instead of the ground shipping. considering this is my DD I can't be down for too long. but they did say if it wasn't in stock that the 2 day shipping could still take up to 2 weeks. I was expecting that they wouldn't have it stocked, but It turns out they did!

how often do you usually grease your driveshaft?

 

I do my oil changes at the dealer and every other or so oil change I ask them to do a squirt.

Did you get the EGR tube situation fixed, sit don’t know how it could have broken.

Mine has zero stress or pressure on mine and never had an issue

 

But when I replaced my drive shaft I noticed that the center Cardin zerk was not getting greased.
So I will do that one, it’s kind of hidden unless you know to look for it

 

As for the EGR issues and my High Idle issues, I have "solved" the EGR problem by unplugging the egr plug and putting a 10ohm resistor in the plug, that took care of my check engine light. I also have the egr valve and the exhaust manifold blocked off for now.

As for the egr hose breaking, no, I have no idea, im just not gonna worry about it until emission comes around and see if I fail.

with the high idle, I first found out that my throttle body was worn out and the butterfly was getting stuck (a little bit of slop in the design of the butterfly), I got a TB from the Junk yard and that fixed the sloppy Butterfly, but my idle was still sitting at 1500. I also shimmed the junkyard TB butterfly valve shaft, behind the spring mechanism, to keep it from slopping in the future.

Turns out The high idling issue came down to the Thermostat being stuck open and continuously cycling coolant! Making the computer brains think that it was still in the warm up phase (as you know they run high idles until they reach operating temp). So I replaced the T-stat and as I watched the temp reach 170, just like magic the idle dropped straight down to 750.

But! then my engine temps kept climbing up to 200 degrees, Original radiator from what I could tell was not in good shape after 342000 miles so I replaced with an OE Denso Radiator and now after getting all of the air bubbles out, I run at 180-185 with the heater on and 185-188 with the heater off. 700 rpm is regular for idle now.

All is good and she is running like a champ!

although the brushes on my starter are being finicky and thats gonna need some service in the next short while, I imagine. she needs a loving tap every once in a while, usually I can just bump the key start in the ignition a few times and the brushes make enough contact to start.

right on, ill just keep up on them similarly.
