It's basically a safety issue, so your system doesn't push current up the line while the utility company is working their side. Solar power companies should be able to offer you a hybrid transfer switch. That basically isolates your system during a power outage and directs your solar power back into your house grid. Problem is, that power isn't very clean as current varies with sunlight. If you had batteries, then they would smooth out the current. But, if you had batteries, you probabaly wouldn't be feeding into the grid.
Personally, I do it all manually, which admittedly isn't the safest way. I've only had to run on generator once, and I made sure no one touched the panel but me. It was a good learning experience in that I now understand how much I can support on my generator and for how long. I also know my small portable A/C is only good for about 2 days before the house gets unbearable.

I have a 5500w gen. with 8500w surge. Setup includes a power transfer switch. I can run my basic needs. Waiting to get quote from electricIan for new main panel with built-in transfer switch. Just won't be able to run air conditioning, clothes dryer and cook a turkey all at once. Just be smart.

Same size gen here too! I just don't have the transfer switch. A friend of mine had a secondary box installed which locks out commercial power to just certain outlets. This keep the utility guys safe without disconnecting everything. I'd love to get the same setup, but it took him way too long to find a decent electrician. Considering that Florida has way too many morons calling themselves electricians, I'll just keep my current setup.

Less than an hour! Vacation starts. Camping (4 days/3 nights) at Black Mountain. Not exactly full blown "roughing it", but tent camping with all meals made there, bonfire, stuff and things....

Truck has been sorta packed, then unloaded to get a picture of HOW to load it. First trip WITH topper. All "camping" with wife previously involved a cabin....First tent camping for her. (Bringing cotton balls for ears)

We'll do final load up Weds afternoon. Leave the house Thursday around day break. Plan is to be set up, bonfire built, dinner et, and kicked back in a chair by 6PM. Up early and exploring Black Mountain first thing Friday morning.
