On Saturday I discovered that something had splashed or globbed onto my 2018 Black Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-Road. It was a burnt orangish gunk that clearly showed that it had dripped down onto the side right behind the passenger door and then spread along the back bed as I drove. I don't recall anything but there's so much construction in NE Ohio that I might've driven under a bridge and not noticed it or a truck might've driven by me and splashed a chemical on it.

It is a truck that I drive generally only on the weekends. I discovered it on Saturday and hadn't driven it since the 13th. I wiped it off with a wet towel. Unfortunately, there's all kind of paint damage under the clearcoat. It is bizarre, I agree. Like whatever it was leached through the clearcoat and damaged the paint. It is smooth to rub your hand over it but visibly the paint is marred underneath the clearcoat. I'm absolutely sick about it -- 1800 miles. I've had two guys look at it and they said that the repairs will probably be noticeable, plus that sticker is there. One suggested repainting the entire side of the truck -- 1800 miles. I'm going to go to a third maybe this afternoon.

Has anybody ever replaced a new bed? Can you get them from the factory with factory paint?

If you can find a black Tacoma that is totalled from front end damage you could purchase the bed, otherwise it sounds like your truck needs repainted.

You wouldn’t buy the “bed” as one package. It’s multiple pieces like the bedsides and composite inner bed. Sounds like you need a new bedside and someone to paint it. Did you claim this on insurance? Deductible is probably cheaper than paying yourself.

I didn't claim it on insurance. I was going to see what it cost first. I didn't know that the bed came in parts, I thought you could get it put together, hopefully painted.

He should not need a bedside unless the chemical ate thru the metal, sounds like just a repaint.

I know it sucks to have this happen to your brand new truck! But it is what it is. I would recommend finding a reputable body shop you trust and have it repainted.

You would be supprised on what goes on behind the scenes at a dealership. Repairs from transportation and miscillaneous on the lot damages are quite common.

I happen to catch this not to long ago. The dealer was spot repainting two tacomas. The one on the right was being masked off to paint the left side of the bed. Most customers wouldn't even notice at time of purchase. Good luck with your truck.

I know I was just letting him know he wouldn’t need the whole bed.

If the body shop is any good they can, the closer the car is to new the easier it is to match. Have you never had a car repaired before?

Was it tire shine? I recall reading on here that some tire shines will eat through the clear coat and stain it.

Yes, I have had cars repaired. I am just concerned that the smooth glass look will be impossible and that the non-factory paint won't hold up. I will get some pictures tonight and post them. All the little dots and the big glob has me concerned about how it will look afterwards. I'll get it repaired nonetheless even if I trade it in and replace it.

A chemical can't really seep under the clearcoat. If anything, it could eat through the clearcoat, but you would be able to tell if that was the case. Hard to really tell without seeing anything, but you could always try a wet sand and buff to see if that corrects anything. Nonetheless, if it needs repaint, black is a fairly easy color to match up for any reputable body shop.

It is bizarre. It's as smooth as a baby's bottom but the paint underneath is marred. I'll get some pics and post them later today. I have court in Cleveland at 4:15 and when I get back home, I'll take a few and post them.

ANY good (indoor with booth) paint shop can paint it perfect.
Actually, if you going to paint it, ask them (for more $$$) to extra clear coat paint the whole truck. I would.
I would NEVER replace the truck bed just for paint.
