05 4.0 head gasket issue. P0012 code Houston area

    I come with about a month into having my head gasket fixed by a mechanic who, like all, may be late on when they deliver but know his stuff. Now he put everything back together and got it working but the p0012 code came up

    Have cleaned the small filter by the dipstick. Have changed bank 1 ocv sensor. Mechanic had opened it up 2-3 times and says timing is correct .and we can't seem to figure it out. Got the heads and valves milled .005 during head gasket change. Changed timing as well .

    anyone with suggestions or an expert in Tacomas In the Houston area?

    I didn't think the heads were supposed to be milled down on these trucks or it can cause the timing to be off.. Seems like I remember reading that somewhere on here.

    So I read .but then someone assured me by telling me this .



    As far as milling the heads...this shortens the travel distance of the timing chain on OHC engines, having an effect similar to timing chain stretch. Yours got 0.005" removed on both heads. , I'd say that if this milling was the problem, you'd be seeing a P0016 correlation error. edit: meaning this does not likely account for your P0012 error code

    Is that the shop on Jones Rd, near 1960?

    Have you inspected the plug and wiring, for the VVT solenoid? Make sure nothing is broken and the connections are good.

    Have you pulled both solenoids to compare to each other? The passenger solenoid may be stuck and not operating properly.

    It may be that a new passenger solenoid is just simply needed.

    Here are two different blocks of mine, with the timing all lined up. As a reference for the cam sensor pick-ups, on the intake cam gears.

    Might be. Didn't ask which shop milled it .the soleinoid for the other bank is a didfdiffe part # .they looked good.

    I have had one solenoid go bad. Had to replace it. The internal mechanism was wedged.

    You can pull it and easily test it with the proper voltage. Make sure it works.

    Use my picture as a reference to make sure your reluctors are in the same position, when the timing is lined up.

    Are we getting the full story here? I understand headgaskets needing to be replaced, but how did the camshaft break?

    Whatever force that acted on the camshaft (and gave it the "hairline crack" your mechanic found) may have also broken something in the vvt actuator.

    The shop told him it had a very small fracture but that it showed it was still good .idk. Then he put it on and it broke while starting. He got another and changed them out .
